Lesson 5 Extended Pentatonics Hey Again! Ok, in the last lesson, we had learned that you can move the Pentatonic scales all over the neck of your axe. Extended Pentetonics is just a way to "tie" these scales together and widen the use of the fretboard. These "chromatic" notes are a cool way to add "color" to your leads. For this lesson, the --/s-- on the string indicates a "slide up", and --\s-- indicates a "slide down". It is the same pattern on the 6th, 4th, and 2nd strings. No slides on them. Then on the 5th, 3rd and 1st strings, you have the slide. This simplifies the memorization of the pattern. Just remember that the "odd" number strings are where your shift or slide occurs in this first pattern. Another very cool thing about this pattern is that it is completely mobile!! Try the pattern out in a different location. Try it also with a recording of a chord in which you could play to. In the above example, record yourself playing an F chord. Just when you thought you were done, there's more! The difference in memorizing this pattern is that the slide happens on the "even" numbered strings. Again, this pattern is completly mobile! Ok, now practice both patterns until they are totally imbeded in your noodle. Practice them in a variety of locations, sliding up and down, with your metronome, and a recorded chord. One last note for this lesson. Well, ok, it's a "mini-lesson" in a lesson. Chromatic notes. You can add notes inside the patterns to make your lead more colorful. These notes are "passing" notes in your extended scale. This means that if you're soloing, you'd want to use them to add to the lead, but not use them as key notes in that lead. If you hold them too long, it will sound like you hit the wrong note! Yikes!! They are there to create a step to the "resolving" note, which is one of the notes in the extended pentatonics we just practiced! Ok, here they are. I used the "O" to show the chromatic notes. Now try all kinds of cool additions. Hammer-On, Pull Off, Trills, Bends, etc., as you ascend and decend through each pattern, in various locations on the fretboard.
