Since its first cultivation 5,000 years ago, the benefits of green tea have been studied, recorded and proven effective. Green tea is anti-microbial (fights bacteria), anti-mutagenic (prevents mutation of bacteria) and anti-oxidant (helps reduce harmful chemicals in the body).
Today, green tea is considered an effective anti-cancer beverage because it contains the most potent antioxidant ever discovered - EGCG or "epigallocatechin gallate".
EGCG in tea works by inhibiting the production of "urokinase" -- an enzyme that helps promote cancer growth. In a test, researchers were able to reduce the number of tumors using EGCG by 73 percent. (Source: National Cancer Center Research Institute. Tokyo, Japan)
According to a University of Kansas research, EGCG antioxidant is 100 times stronger than vitamin C and 25 times more potent than vitamin E in protecting human body cells.
Meanwhile, surveys of Asian tea drinkers show that those who consume four to six cups of green tea a day have a lesser chance of having breast, esophagus, liver, lung and skin cancers than those who consume little amount or never drink green tea at all.
