HCW New York's D-Day 2001 - November 24th, 2001
This year's D-Day was a smash hit. Most say that it was decent, but personally I thought it rose above the expectations of many and became one of the best PPV's of this year. Despite low fan turnout and many changes made to HCW in its roster and its setup, HCW pulled through and put on a great show. Let's take a look at the results.
Phil MV def. Jeremy Peraza by submission
This match was very good for a lower card match. Both men put on a great match and surprised the audiance with some surprising action. This match was mainly defined by Jeremy Peraza's textbook moonsault, a nice tornado DDT and some clever reversals. In the end, however, it was Phil MV's infamous Baba that caused Peraza to lose his spirit and Phil finished it off nicely with a sharpshooter. Expect to see Peraza in other matches, rumor has it the next man he will face off with is another relatively new character, Moe Mentum. Phil MV will remain in the Chocolate Eater circut, and he will face more opponents down the road.
Cool Docta Money Mustafa Johnson def. Johnny Flair by pin fall to win the U.S. Title
Johnson's reward for his winning streak in HCW was a shot at Johnny Flair's underappreciated U.S. Title. Johnny Flair, having stated a few times before the U.S. Title was of no worth to him (because, after all, it was won for him by his former partner and now enemy, Bad Brad). The match was a clean fight until Eric Wingender interrupted the match and demanded that he be put in the match because of Johnny Flair's interference with Eric Wingender's title defense the week before. So, with 3 wrestlers each competing for HCW gold, the match was finally underway. The match was defined by many spots each involving technical wrestling and hardcore brawling. Mustafa held himself up nicely, even though he had stepped onto a whole different battleground with Flair and Wings, HCW veterans and enemies as of late. Johnny Flair almost broke his neck, but he was able to dish out even more lethal doses of his patented style of brutal, technical power wrestling. In spite of his disadvantage size-wise, Wingender put up a tough fight, sporting his style of hardcore and his own technical move set. This match was one for the record books folks, possibly the longest, most tiring and physically demanding match in HCW history. In the end of this match, Mustafa came out the victor with a sunset flip and became the new HCW U.S. Champion. Mustafa will no doubt be defending his title in the future and keeping the U.S. Title scene alive. Johnny Flair is looking to shoot the moon and enter the Heavyweight Title scene, while Eric Wingender keeps himself busy with his own CE Title reign.
Teddy MV and Moe Mentum def. Bad Brad and Kyle Simmons
In an unexpected return, after vanishing for many weeks, Spike the Sharpman returned to HCW... as the federation's new commishioner! And the first match he booked was exactly what the fans wanted to see; Teddy MV in his return bout against Bad Brad, the man who hit him with a car and put him out of commission for several months. There was one stipulation, however. Each man had to fight alongside a jobber. In this case, Moe Mentum teamed with TMV, and Kyle Simmons teamed up with Bad Brad. TMV came out and got right to the point. He immediately hit Brad with a trash can lid and threw down a roll of barbed wire. After hitting a powerbomb to Brad onto the barbed wire, the match was underway. Jobbers fought jobbers, big timers fought big timers, and even a little bit of jobber against big timer action. This match was fast and furious. Teddy hit his famous frog splash, Moe hit his new claim to fame, the Space Tornado Ogawa (known as an STO), Brad hit a swanton, and Kyle hit his trademark coneshot. What a match. The match ended though, with Teddy and Moe setting up a double team move in the Doomsday Device position. Brad then intervened and threw a chair at TMV, who then threw the chair at Simmonds. Simmonds was Bad Bradinator'd off of Moe onto the ground below, where TMV got the three count. By winning this match Teddy MV has proven his return, but he is not done by a long shot. He wants to kill Brad singlehandedly. Will he get his chance? You will find out soon enough. As for the jobbers, Moe Mentum will be fighting matches of his own in the upcoming months, but he will most likely stay a jobber. And as for Kyle, well, I'd expect him to stay a jobber for the rest of his career as well.
That's all for D-Day 2001! Highlights from D-Day will be shown in the next HCW music video. So be on the lookout. Peace -Rob
