loon to hear it's call What makes a bird, a bird? All birds are covered with feathers. These feathers can be
waterproof and windproof. Feathers keep a bird warm and help to
streamline their bodies. The color of birds feathers can help to
attract mates. All birds have a beak that can be used to pick up food, break open
nuts and seeds, and tear apart flesh. Some beaks are hooked
others are thin and pointed. All birds lay eggs. Normally the eggs are kept warm by the
parents in a nest. The incubation period, the amount of time it
takes for a fertilized egg to grow into a chick varies from 10 days to
84 days. Some birds are very weak and totally dependant on their
parents when they hatch. Others can move and find food for
themselves almost immediately after they are born. Birds make many different sounds. Some sing beautiful songs,
other squawk. Each state has its own state bird. Some birds are claimed by
many states for example the Cardinal is the state bird of: Illinois,
Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.
Some birds such as the Cactus Wren of Arizona are unique to one state.
