Entry for May 30, 2006
Welcome one and all to this, the first entry in Life and Times. So let us begin.
Today is far from a red-letter day. It is, in fact, just another day, albeit a day where I feel lonely---my wife is still in France, and is not due to return until Thursday. I have considered making a cake for her return, however am unsure whether to use the 8" round single-layer I have in the freezer, or to purchase a heart-shaped pan and make a nice double layer from red velvet. Heck, I'm not even sure if she likes red velvet.
So I work as a cake decorator. I love the work, however I find that the income is not exactly where I would like it to be. Perhaps at a different bakery---a more posh establishment---but I have not yet learned the vagaries of rolled fondant or gum paste yet. My normal shift is from 0400--1200, which leaves me a goodly amount of time during the day, but drastically shortens the evening hours I have available. Pros and cons, I know.
There are other things I like to do, as well. I like to cook---my wife loves my food, and my in-laws have raved about it (my mother-in-law especially likes it when I cook over at their place). I enjoy sewing, and have made all of the summer shirts which I like to wear (I like button downs, and abhore T-shirts). I enjoy amateur radio, and wish my HF transciever was working. I recently acquired a wood lathe, and am enjoying the learning process of woodturning.
I've thought about any and all of these as possible business venues. Handcrafts, although salable for quite a price, don't lend themselves well to venues such as eBay. Folks looking for a shirt or a pen on eBay aren't looking for collectors items or one-off pieces, it seems.
Hopefully, I'll be able to use this venue to display some of my work. If any of you should find it appealing, or should have any ideas on good venues, I'm more than willing to read your ideas.
