Mealtime is a shambles once again, as Helen circles the table, groping, grabbing food off plates and eating with her hands. When she gets to Annie's plate and meets resistance, the family tries to tell Annie that they just allow it. Annie points out that placating Helen will just make her spoiled, and taking the easy way out will never ultimately help Helen learn.
SNEAK A PEEK of The Miracle Worker from October 2000
When Helen angrily dashes her doll onto the floor, Annie spells 'bad girl' and lets her feel her frowning face. Helen imitates it. Then, Annie shows her how to rock the doll, and spells out 'good girl' in her hand. Here, Annie Sullivan lets Helen feel her face as she smiles and nods approval.
WAIT THERE'S MORE!
As the battle ensues, Annie asks the family to leave them alone in the dining room together. In one of the most memorable scenes, Annie struggles with Helen at the table all day. Helen wallers in the floor kicking, throws both food and spoons, and even tries climbing over the table to avoid sitting and eating off of a plate. Annie never quits, and at the end of the day can (wearily) announce: "She ate from her own plate. She ate with a spoon---herself.
And she folded her napkin."
So THAT's where you put the key!

When Helen is convinced that no one is around, she takes the key from her mouth and drops it into the well. Annie will prove to her that she is not so easy to 'get rid of!'
Helen may not know it yet, but she has met her match. As the menfolk discuss the obstinance of the generals in the war, Annie is about to take on the title as General in the battle with Helen.
Soon after this tableside victory, it becomes clear that Helen has not given up her temper tantrums with the family. She still demands her own way and no one is willing to fight over it. No one, that is, except Annie.
So that she doesn't lose the ground she has gained with Helen, Annie takes her out to a small garden house where she can work with her alone for two weeks. Tirelessly, she turns everything into a lesson. Here, she uses the boy Percy (Rickey Eberhardt) to play a game to get Helen to come out from under the bed.
