Fall Semester 1999
We tried to recruit new members at the Club Fair of Tuesday, 21 September in the ARCC. We held a raffle there with the prize being the choice of a free entance ticket on our Richmond trip or a ceramic pen. Han Xiao, who helped by manning our table, won the prize. He chose the pen.

Throughout this semester, the Student Government Association was in disarray and did nothing of note. Chris Foxwell attended all but the December meeting, where Brian Simmons represented the club.

Probably all of those works had been glaze-fired as of Sunday, 17 October, when we unloaded our second Fall kiln.

Spring 2000

The Club went to the Baltimore Clayworks on the last day of the "Sublime Servers" exhibit (Saturday, 26 February). Cindy Digulimio, Walter Gostowski, and Brian Simmons were the participants. They then went to the Clayworks' supply store, and then the Potters Guild of Baltimore, which was having a half price sale.

They headed back to Frederick and ate at the Golden Corral, and briefly visited the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center.

Chris Foxwell attended the NCECA Convention in Denver, Colorado in mid-March. He stayed with former club member Chad Wiles and other members of Sierra Nevada College's "delegation". Professor Ben Culbertson also attended.

The Club voted to use some alloted money to help pay for Chris's expenses. He gave a report on the convention on his return.

The Art Club is went to Frederick to peruse their galleries on Saturday Afternoon, 1 April. We went to the Tatem Arts Center at Hood College, where we saw the "Reflections" exhibit at the Hodson Gallery. The exhibit was to celebrate Women's History Month in March, and displayed paintings, mixed-media prints, and sculpture that expressed the experiences and feelings about women in society of the four artists featured: Jill A. Lion, Christine Nicoll Parson, Patricia Underwood, and Diane Wilson Hollowell.

We then went downtown and perused four galleries: Thames Fine Arts & Framing, McGuire Fine Arts Gallery & Framing, The Museum Shop, and the Artist Gallery.

We went to the reception of the Delaplaine Visual Art Center's "Fire & Glass" exhibit featuring our own Professor Jason Mills, 3-D design. The works were ceramic. The reception had live music (Stream Ohrstom & Guest). The reception was from 3 to 5 pm .

Afterwards, we shopped in the Fredericktowne Mall, eating at Arby's. We returned before 8 pm.

A few people went to the National Gallery with the Art Department's trip on Sunday, April 9. [See below.]

We held our Spring Student Art Show from Monday Morning, 8 May thru Monday Afternoon, 15 May in the Kepler Theater Lobby.

We scheduled a Pottery Sale for Saturday, 20 May from 8 am until 2 pm. We spent $30 of Earned Income to rent two spaces (Spaces 26 & 27) at the Western Maryland Center Craft Fair. It was held in their parking lot off of Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland.

We cancelled for lack of a certified HCC fleet vehicle driver. The plan was to use the 15 passenger van to haul tables and merchandise out there and back. Most of our club had other obligations or were involved in Commencement that day.

Though the event was rain or shine, that morning did have rain, and the rest of the day was cold and damp, so perhaps it was best we cancelled.

Also on Saturday, 20 May, our Club President, Chris Foxwell, graduated from Hagerstown Community College. He was awarded at the ceremony with two plaques commemorating his involvement in campus activities.

We held a Tilemaking Workshop with Moravian Pottery & Tile Works' Adam Zayas
on Friday, 26 May from 10 am until 5 pm & Saturday, 27 May from 9 am until 5 pm
Adam Zayas has been head ceramist of the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works since 1987. His work there includes designing tile installations, maintaining historical accuracy, providing technical support, and coordinating and administering apprenticeships, residences, classes, and internships.

He is a graduate of Boston University's program in Artisanry. He has broad, in depth experience with clay, glazes, kilns, and mold making. He has worked as a technical consultant in Honduras, Central America. He currently resides in Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania.

This two day workshop will explore designing of tiles and mosaics. Many of the design methods are those utilized by the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works.

Participants will work out tile deigns, cast molds, and observe the production of a mosaic, as well as the setting of a previously fired mosaic.

This workshop was open to all skill levels, beginner thru advanced.
