Re:          Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation Center

In this memo, I will highlight our class visit to Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation Center. Highlights will include general information about the institution, lecture, tour of the facility, SWOT analysis, and a personal overall analysis of the organization.

Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation Center is located near UNLV. This is a sub acute institution, dealing with no emergencies. The institution can easily accommodate 118 patients. 98% of the patients walk out satisfied with their care. This organization does not accept Medicare or Medicaid. The organization is contracted with two HMOs, and very rarely accommodates patients without insurance.  There are usually four physicians staffed on a daily basis, with 1 RN, 2 LPN, and 2 CAN. Currently, Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation Center is an employer of approximately 347 employees. Sub acute visits usually last between 9-11 days on average. Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation belongs to a family of 270 additional properties managed under CHI Trauma Health.

The first speaker was Darren Cook; he is the Executive Director of the center. Mr. Cook talked about how the organization runs in general, along with his job satisfaction working for a managed care organization. In addition, Mr. Cook provided most of the statistics about the organization.

Roselyn Collins is the Director of Clinical Services. Mrs. Collins gave our class a tour of the institution. Most of the information provided by Mrs. Collins was about daily operations of the institution, and in addition mentioned the AIT program, which refers to as the Administrator in Training program. She spoke highly of the program, and encouraged those entering into this field to take this particular course.

SWOT Analysis of the organization:

The strengths I found to exist in the organization were the manageable size of the organization. In addition, Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation Center is part of a family of 270 rehab facilities, which makes it belong to a very strong organization. I find that an organization of this kind will be easy to manage, and remain in business as long as everything is done properly.

Weakness of the organization is a little hard to determine. At this point, my observation of the organization is that it’s a stable business, and doesn’t plan on expanding within its boundaries.

Opportunities for this organization are very limited. The goal to my understanding is to keep an easy to manage organization, the more expansion, more labor needed, therefore will grow traffic. For the building to physically expand is literally out of the question.

Threats to this organization will vary due to the fact many managed care organizations are arising, especially here in Southern Nevada. With the population growth as calculated, more organizations will open up, this can endanger the organization by competing with bigger managed care organizations, which have the financial backing to advertise, and provide better services and equipment to patients.

My overall analysis of the organization is that it’s very small, easy to manage. However, this is an organization and field I do not plan on considering for my practicum. This is a very low pace organization, and feels that it will not provide for the challenges I am looking for by obtaining my degree. However, the AIT program is very interesting and feel that it will be beneficial, yet managed care isn’t the place I plan on considering.  Therefore, this is an organization I do not want to consider for my practicum.
