| STATE STANDARDS: TEKS.112.43.b.4: Investigations are used to learn about the natural world. Students should understand that certain types of questions can be answered by investigations, and that methods, models, and conclusions built from these investigations change as new observations are made. Models of objects and events are tools for understanding the natural world and can show how systems work. They have limitations and based on new discoveries are constantly being modified to more closely reflect the natural world. Non-fiction trade books can help students learn about the natural world through examination/investigation of past events. Further, trade books can encourage student inquiry on current issues related to the trade book's topic. TEXES.LIFESC.8-12.IV: The science teacher has theoretical and practical knowledge about teaching science and about how students learn science. Teachers can use trade books to motivate and engage students in science concepts, such as ecology, as in the case of The Race To Save The Lord God Bird. If students are interested in a topic, they will value that topic and want to learn about it. NATIONAL STANDARDS: NSTA.4 (Standard 4): Context of Science. The program prepares candidates to relate science to the daily lives and interests of students and to a larger framework of human endeavor and understanding. The context of science refers to relationships among systems of human endeavor including science and technology; relationships among scientific, technological, personal, social and cultural values; and the relevance and importance of science to the personal lives of students. Tradebooks can help students become interested in and learn about science on a more personal level through the process of storytelling. |
