| Inclusion involves educating students with exceptionalities via a total immersion-style system. Meaning, exceptional students are not only included in regular classrooms, but they are also accommodated for through support services (involving parents, teachers, and special-education teachers) that the school has set up, and teachers work with special-education teachers to create an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each exceptional student (p. 243.) Research has shown that inclusion of exceptional students in regular classrooms helps these students deal with real world situations. Additionally, the other students in the classroom learn to develop relationships with these exceptional students. In addition to teaching strategies, technology can be used to accommodate the diversity of learners in the classroom. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) can help students acquire skills faster. Additionally, computer-adaptive programs can adapt the lesson according to the progress of the student and can provide students with individualized feedback. Further, computers can also be adapted to meet the needs of students with physical, visual, and hearing needs. Finally, teachers can use computers to track students progress and gather data on students, which in turn can be utilized to improve instruction. This chapter has helped to make me aware of the various teaching strategies that are available to me. |
