In december of
1999 I decided to pull the engine and transmision from the cadillac
.The engine felt basically sound but used quite a lot of oil and the valves
and lifters wery quite noisy.

My friend Steve and I pulled the engine in an afternoon.
I had pulled the transmission a couple of days earlier to save time
and I was'nt sure if I had to jack the car way up to pull the two together.
The engine was filthy and after days
of cleaning it was disassembled and all the internal parts measured. The
heads looked to be in good shape but needed to go have the valves done.
The shop had to install two new valves and new
guides and seats. The cam was absolutley gone and must have been made from
chocolate along with the plastic timing gear. This was all replaced with
good American metal parts.
The block was sent to measured
and came back just honed. As there was so little wear in the bores this
meant I could re use the original pistons . New piston rings were installed
from Napa .

The crankshaft was measured and found to
be in prfect condition with no wear at all on the journals so it was re-used
with no machinning needed . This saved some money as under sized
main bearrings are very expesive. For some reason, however rodbearrings
are quite cheap.
A new cam from Napa along with all the timming
components was used . I have found Napa to be an excellent source for parts
for old cadillacs and thier prices are better than all the catalog houses.

In March I put the engine back in the cadillac and have now done about 5000 miles . Apart from a few teething problems she ran great right from the start . I havent used any oil since the rebuild and am getting about 12.5 mpg around town which seems good. I believe that the car will now get me anywhereand one of these summers I want to take her accross country with the top down . May be ill drive down old Route 66.
