| Science is something that people do. The following are some of the processes that scientists use to do science. These are the very same processes that you can use as science students. Check out our science process skills outline. |
| Observing Using all five senses to get information about the world--about objects and events (also known as phenomena) Reporting and Recording Communicating observations, data, and results, by writing, speaking, drawing, recording sounds , photography, video, etc. Measuring Using special tools to identify length, depth, distance, weight, time, temperature, age, etc. of objects and events Collecting Gathering, preserving, and storing specimens, samples, and data Identifying Naming and describing objects and events, as well as their observable properties Classifying Sorting, grouping, or categorizing objects and events based upon common characteristics and relationships Comparing Recognizing similarities in objects, events, or relationships Contrasting Recognizing differences in objects, events, or relationships Sequencing Placing objects and events in order, according to criteria like size, color, shape, importance, occurrence, form, function, etc. Recognizing Relationships Seeing connections and relationships between objects or events, including cause and effect relationships Analyzing / Interpreting Explaining the meaning of observations and collected data Forming Models Constructing a physical or mental representation of objects or events Predicting Using observations and previous discoveries to propose possible outcomes or future events Experimenting Setting up a controlled situation in order to test predictions Controlling Variables Recognizing and manipulating factors that effect the outcome of events and experiments Inferring Using collected observations and data to formulate explanations and deductions about events that have occurred Drawing Conclusions Examining results/outcomes and making assumptions about what happened and why |
