| Technically the first album by the streamlined Scarlet River, This I Know was an unexpected album that came about when the brothers faced technical difficulties editing the Hope video. "A love song to God," This I Know can be seen as the continuation to God Candy. Where God Candy ended with the title track, This I Know picks up. Mellow, peaceful, and full of hope and love, the album lacks the straight ahead rock and roll of God Candy, but has the spirit and love of the live album. Much like God Candy, it is nearly impossible to pick out a favorite song. However, "Golden Street" may be one of the finest songs Jonathan has written. A beautiful story song written in the mold of Bob Dylan, the simple musical backing and Jonathan's now perfect voice paint the narrators story with precise strokes and bold colors. "Use Your Wings" features some of the vocal and musical layering that appeared on God Candy, making it standout mainly because it lacks the simplicity of the other songs on the album. The ghost track, "Zion," is incredibly poignant since the September 11 tragedies. It evokes the feeling and idealism of Jonathan's idol, Bono. |
