BUTLER COUNTY ROAD CREW

This painting was done from a photograph taken in 1904, these men were a County Road Grading Crew, they worked the Fifth District of Butler County. This picture was taken on the Old Smith Farm, now known as the Roy Lee Farm, the house and well can be seen behind their "Shanty Wagon". This was a pull off place beside the road, they carried their food and feed for their teams along with them in the "Shanty Wagon", they slept in this wagon as well. The men are, from left to right:





Levi Flener, standing In door of shanty, he was the cook; Houston Flener, riding mule, this pair of mules belonged to him, he is driving lead mules; Darb Kessinger, wearing straw hat, with a pick in his hand; Buckley Flener, standing in the middle; lsiah Evans, man with ax in his hand; Harry Ingram, riding seat of grader and driving mules, the lead pair of mules belonged to him; Warren Flener, on back of grader, he handled the blade of the grader with wheels shown, the pair mules used as the wheelers, or next to the grader belonged to him; Stanley Smith, wearing overalls, also riding back of grader; Mr. Stanley Smith is the only member of this crew still living, he is eighty years old, he was fifteen at that time.

The photograph belongs to Mrs. Betty Porter, Granddaughter of Houston Flener. This painting was done in 1971 by Mrs. Lucille Flener.
