Hazel Anderson grew up with her mom, dad and little brother. In her preteen years, though, her dad packed up and left them. Hazel spent as much time as she could with her best friend, Claire, and with her various boyfriends. She hated going home or being around her mother. As Hazel's mom fell into alcoholism and drugs, Hazel was left to take care of herself, her brother, and her mom. Bitter against her parents, she began adopting a "people only use people" view towards life. She didn't believe in voting or trying to get involved with politics, because "they're all corrupt anyway. None of them care about any of us." She wasn't afraid to give herself to boys in return for a good meal or place to stay for a night. Her reputation became bad around her town, among the older crowd. She picked up smoking when she was sixteen, and stole whatever she could. In her last year of high school, she was surprised to make friends with the strangest member of her class-- seventeen-year-old Daemon Foster. Though she and Daemon had nothing at all in common, he began to introduce her to a way to travel away from her troubles and into other worlds... through books.
When Daemon went away to college, Hazel thought their friendship had ended. She gave birth to a baby girl that she named Ariel. Claire had committed suicide not too long before that. Claire had always called herself "Ariel" when she and Hazel were playing games, as little girls, so Hazel named her daughter for her friend.
Hazel had been following Trace Landon's career and personal life almost since his first movie part. She had predicted his rise to stardom, and dreamed of getting to meet him. Her chance finally comes when she's eighteen... |
