SCHARZWÄLDER KIRSCH (Black Forest)

Freiburg, Germany

12 August 2001

Life is everywhere around us.

There is no better way to enjoy Germany than to have a hike in the Black Forest.  Being with nature was a learning and refreshing experience.  I enjoyed picking berries and eating them along the way.  Friendly Germany hikers advised us not to get berries from the low grounds as foxes in the forest had probably licked them.  I had fun playing with the lovely flowers, catching grasshoppers and butterflies, picking interesting stones, and many more.  The feel of the sun and wind, the sound of the birds, the exchange of laughter and “notes” about nature with Keith, Marly, and Kline- all these made the walk a wonderful experience.

It was a thrill to be meeting friendly German hikers in the forest.  I too had walked in forests in Moscow, but it was unusual to be greeted by Russian hikers.  My experience in Freiburg was the opposite.  The hikers we met along the way greeted us with warm “Good morning” and “Hello.”  Oh I remember passing a group of elders having a picnic.  They called Kline and me and gave a slice of apple-cheese cake.  The cake was really good- it was the best tasting apple-cheese cake I ever tasted!
