I was born in Hermitage Bay in the fishing outport of Little Bay, later renamed Stone Valley. My father Reginald Strickland was a boat builder who built many boats for the fishermen on the south coast of Newfoundland. My mother Myrtle Strickland now lives in Port Aux Basques.Nl. Like my father I also build boats but on a much smaller scale as the boats I build are radio controlled model fishing boats and Grand Bank dorys.
At the age of eight I learned how to play the accordion and started playing music for the "times" that were held at the schoolhouse. I enjoy playing Newfoundland music and in the past have played the accordion with recording artist Edison Williams. I also played the accordion for many years as a member of the band " The Sou'wester's". In 2001 I was given the opportunity to work with Julianne Moore in the movie "The Shipping News" and my music was recorded for one of the scenes in the movie.
Presently I am living in Dartmouth,NS and have a band by the name of "Port & Starboard" which plays Newfie, country and country rock music. We play reguarly at different venues around Nova Scotia but mainly in the Halifax - Dartmouth area.
If you want to have a good time and hear some great Newfie music come out to the Newfoundland Club on Wright Ave in Dartmouth, we perform there at least once every month. To get more information regarding the band click on the "Port & Starboard" link on this page.
I feel that our Newfoundland music is fading into the past so I hope that this website and others like it will help to keep our music alive.
