CITY OF HAYWARD

FY 2004-05

Hayward Community Gardens

2nd Quarterly Report—October–December 2004

SECTION 1:       SUMMARY

The gardens celebrated the harvest this fall with a potluck fiesta. About 60 people attended for barbecue, music, games, and a recipe contest. The Grow the Garden project was launched with the order and arrival of our two greenhouses, which should be assembled by January. Membership sign-ups have been brisk, with about 30 members signing up as of the end of December. We are delighted with the response as we usually don’t hold the registration period until the spring. Signups will continue through January.

SECTION 2:       WORK PROGRAM PERFORMANCE

Objective A: Maintain or increase our services to low-income Hayward residents, particularly apartment dwellers

  • Launched the community food security Grow the Garden project in November with the purchase of 2 greenhouses.
  • Provided membership and activities information at Hayward Farmer’s Market (ongoing)

Objective B: Establish consistent administrative procedures and easily maintained system for fiscal matters, record-keeping and membership accountability

  • Convened a full meeting of the Board of Directors (September) including Operations and Administrative Committees
  • CDBG Work Plan finalized
  • Mail and posted a letter from the Board explaining the new membership fees that provide for reduced fees for low-income Hayward residents and strongly discourages the holding of multiple plots
  • Began collecting membership registrations and fees, which will continue through January 2005
  • Maintained waiting list which had 7 prospective gardeners as of December 2004

Objective C: Encourage cultural expression, diversity in techniques and creativity within safety regulations and public ordinances

  • The Board and its subcommittees continued to meet regularly
  • Rules and consequences were translated into Spanish and added to the registration packet, with member signature required to become a garden member

Objective D: Improve social experience and interaction between garden members.

  • Garden potluck fiesta for all members held in September with food, recipe contest, and games
