HAYWARD COMMUNITY GARDENS
1st Qtr Report, July 2003-Sept 2003
We had a successful summer at the Hayward Farmers’ Market
selling heirloom tomatoes at affordable cost to market shoppers; also nopales,
garbanzo, fava and Anasazi beans.
Notice was posted, and in certain instances warning letters sent, so all members are aware that everyone is expected to use water wisely in anticipation of rising operating costs and that this rule will be enforced.
As the quarter progressed and contract was not signed, discussion at the board meetings was directed toward ideas and plans for self-sufficiency and sustainability for the community garden.
A young artist was commissioned for the purpose of creating a poster to post throughout the city in order to bring in new members and increase awareness about the gardens.
A certified arborist was engaged to prune back the mulberry tree at the entrance and then returned to cable the tree correctly as there was danger of the trunk splitting further and large limbs falling. Diseased fruit trees were also removed from the Eden garden.
