HAYWARD COMMUNITY GARDENS

OPERATIONS COMMITTEE MEETING

DECEMBER 6, 2003

Chair:   Sandy Frost

Present:   Jose Romero, Juan Ortiz, Ricardo Torres, Luis Montanez, Chico Rios

The financial state of the gardens was discussed among those present.   Owing to the fact that the CDBG contract was signed five months after the grant funding cycle began, the bank account is seriously depleted.  It was also explained that as of this date the City of Hayward would only be reimbursing 50% of the garden’s eligible expenses.  Last year, 100% of the utilities were paid.  Two years ago, 60% of the garden’s eligible expenses were paid.  In order to stay operational, the gardens must generate more income through additional grant funding or sales.   It was decided that a general membership meeting would be held in two weeks on Saturday, December 20, to discuss the state of the gardens and issues related to the upcoming membership year.

Those present were informed that a separate Administrative Committee has been formed to handle the business of the nonprofit.   The Operations Committee will now solely be responsible for enforcing the rules and keeping the garden clean and productive.

Action items:

  1. Post general membership meeting for December 20.
  2. Correspondence related to general membership and Operations Committee criteria.
  3. Application for 2004.
  4. Flowers for market sales.
