| Umbra By: Dawson E. Rambo Rating: R, but I would give it an NC-17 if it were up to me Category(ies): A, T, MSR Official Summary: After being called in to investigate a strange series of military murders, Mulder and Scully uncover a deeper conspiracy that leads to the heart of the Consortium's ultimate plan. What Hayseed says: Wow. That's what I say about most of Dawson's stuff -- he's not around any more, but da-amn could that fellow put a lot into a story. If you want to learn about Navy procedure from a story that's far more interesting than anything Tom Clancy could come up with, then this is the story for you. It's also got CrazyApeshit!Scully, which is always a joy. A cautionary word, however -- long as hell. Where can I find this story? The Annex Tampons for Men By: campylobacter Rating: PG Category(ies): H Official Summary: Kersh shops for tampons What Hayseed says: Too short to say much about, else I'll give it away. Suffice to say -- ha, very ha. Where can I find this story? camp's own site Resurgam By: Ophelia Rating: NC-17 Category(ies): X(-File), A, MSR Official Summary: Something very angry is haunting a tiny graveyard on the Vineyard. What Hayseed says: A genuinely creepy casefile with lots of mytharc to boot. The MSR is a subtle undercurrent that I really appreciate -- a sort of humming tension throughout the dialogue. We get a good dose of both Mulder and Scully backstory type stuff, which I always quite enjoy. All in all, a story that goes a long way to restoring my faith in a fandom that I had considered as totally corrupted by TYOG Syndrome. Where can I find this story? Gossamer, like most everything else Your Platonic Relationship: An Owner's Manual By: Lilla Vaughn Rating: PG-13 Category(ies): H, UST Official Summary: I think the title speaks for itself. Oh, and there are rocks falling from the sky, too. What Hayseed says: You don't run across many second-person stories, but this one carries it off with a bit of panache, I think. This story appeases both my inner-Noromo and my inner-romantic. Also, it's quite short, which is refreshing. Note -- this fic won two Spooky Awards back in 1998. Where can I find this story? Lilla's Homepage Leave a Message By: Amanda Finch and Tim Scott Rating: PG Category(ies): Humor, baby Official Summary: Our favorite agents' terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Or, "When Good Pranks Go Bad." What Hayseed says: You really should read everything Amanda Finch has ever written. I also highly recommend her "Totally Useless" series, but "Leave a Message" had me howling. Seriously. Howling. Where can I find this story? Gossamer, of course Full of Secrets By: Jennifer-Oksana Rating: PG-13 Category(ies): MSR, C(rossover), A(ngst) Official Summary: Go back to 1992, to a town where there are giants, dwarves, and cherry pie that will kill you -- if you're not already dead. Mulder and Scully are about to discover that in Twin Peaks, mysteries never die -- they just get more intense. What Hayseed says: I really like Jenny-O's work, pretty much in its entirety. But this is my favorite, because I'm a huge Twin Peaks fan in addition to everything else I do. Caution -- unfortunately, you have to know a fair amount about Twin Peaks to follow this story, but I tell you right now that it's totally worth checking out some episode transcripts and renting a few DVDs. This is a really well-crafted fic. Where can I find this story? Jen's website The Magician Sequence Book I: The Magician Book II: The Runaway Book III: The Dark Queen By: Suzanne Bickerstaffe and Jennifer Lyon Rating: Books I and III are NC-17 (although PG versions are available) and Book II is PG Category(ies): MSR, T (advenTure), AU Official Summary: Mulder and Scully investigate the appearance of a strange creature in an MIT laboratory and find themselves drawn through a vortex into another world -- a world where magic works -- a world that is threatened by a terrible darkness. What Hayseed says: This is actually the first fanfic that I ever read. And really, what more do you need in a story than Scully with a big-ass sword? Original and inventive, and I haven't read a fic that topped it yet. Consider yourself forewarned, however -- it's long as hell. Where can I find this story?
