The Family of James
Marshall 1821 to 2001
James
Marshall was born in Ballybay town, County of
Monaghan, Ireland in 1821. James and a brother John emigrated to
Canada in 1840s, arriving in Port Hope, where they began their search for land.
They journeyed north through Bewdley on Rice
Lake where brother John settled on a farm, just to the East of Bewdley. (At this writing no further record of John’s
family could be traced.) James died on Feb. ,1907 at
the age of 86 and was buried in Janetville Cemetery.

Margaret (Little) on the front side ; James and
Margaret ( Little) on the reverse..
James continued and eventually
settled on the Broad Road
in Manvers
Township near Newry (now known as Yelverton).
In 1845 he took up Crown
Land on Lot
8 on the 12th. Concession of Manvers
Township in what is
now Victoria County.
James cleared the land and built a log cabin. He married Margaret J. Little (daughter of Simon Little of the Township
of Clark) on October 2nd 1852. Margaret
was born in 1833 and died on February 1, 1898. They raised 13 children. All the
children except the last three were raised in the log cabin and the two last
boys were the only ones to receive a good education.
James was very much an
Irishman and on Saturday night could hold his own in the Janetville
Tavern, but would always be in church on Sunday morning to teach Sunday School.
1. Andrew, the
first son of James was born on May 24
1852. . Andrew was the first to go out on his own. He married Ellen Leslie (1855-1927) of Ballyduff.
Andrew was buried on June 4th. 1931 at Riverside Cemetery,
Lindsay.
They raised two children,
Wilbert Leslie born 1881 died 1923 and Irene Mary Elizabeth born Dec. 9 1896 and died Dec. 1973.
Andrew farmed and was also a businessman in that he bought and sold farms in
the area. He had a farm at the North end of William
Street, Lindsay (where Springdale
housing development is now located). They were living there when his son
Wilbert Leslie married Pearl Eleanor Thurston (born 1887) in 1905.
The last farm Andrew owned was in
Prince Albert, Ontario
in 1918 from where his daughter Irene, met her future husband, James Anderson Boe. After returning to Lindsay, Andrew dabbled in Real
Estate while living on Colborne
Street. He later moved to Toronto
for a short time and lived on Fenwick Avenue
off Danforth Avenue.
His son Wilbert and Pearl Eleanor
lived just to the north on Farrier
Street.
Wilbert and Pearl’s
first child was a still born daughter, born here and buried in Dunsford cemetery, the final resting place of the Thurston
family.
Their only son Wilbert Frederick
William was born in Lindsay (Ross Memorial
Hospital) July 12 1909.
Andrew sold out in Toronto
and resettled in Lindsay at 224 Kent Street West
where they lived until the passing of his wife, Ellen. While in Lindsay, Andrew
was again connected to the Real Estate trade and made several good sales.
Andrew moved to Port Perry to live with his daughter Irene who married James A.
Boe on June
10, 1925.
From this marriage Irene and Jim
raised two daughters, Shirley Eleanor born March 2, 1929 in Port Perry and Andrea Donna-Marie born in
Toronto Feb 16, 1939 while the family was living in Larder
Lake. Irene and Jim operated a
Standard Garage in Port Perry and a garage at Manchester
until moving north in 1937. While in Larder
Lake James
(Jim) worked at Ravine River Gold Mine in Larder
Lake as a Stationary Engineer.
Later on he worked in Kerr- Addison and they lived in Kearns,
Ontario.
In 1941 Irene, James and
family returned to Toronto where he
worked as Plant Engineer for New Method Laundry and settled on Constance
Street near High
Park.
James, with help of his family
and Fred Marshall and family, his future son in law Jim and various friends and
co workers built a cottage at Moore’s
Falls on Moore
Lake in the fall of 1957. This was
his life and interest until his death in April 1963. He was buried in Riverside
Cemetery, Lindsay. Irene continued
to live in Toronto until Andrea was
married in 1965 when she moved to the Oshawa
area to Hillside Manor. She passed away on Dec. 1, 1973 and was buried beside her husband.
Shirley married James Sinclair Cuthbertson ,
who taught school in Oshawa
where they still live. The raised two daughters Ann Eleanor,
born March 3
1957 and Janice Elizabeth born Sept. 11, 1959.
Andrea married an Islington
Dentist, Howard Roger Cornwall on March
5, 1965. They raised two children Douglas James born Jan. 1, 1968 and Dana Lynn born May 13, 1972.
Andrew’s son Wilbert
Leslie, on losing his wife Pearl Eleanor in April 1914, at the age of 27,
married the nurse Gertrude Rae of Reaboro and with
his son W. Frederick William moved to Prince Albert .
In 1919 they moved to Logan Avenue
in Toronto where Wilbert gained
employment in the construction of the Bloor Street
Viaduct (over the Don River Valley).
He was injured and developed blood poison from which he died in April 1924. He
was buried in Riverside Cemetery,
Lindsay.
Wilbert’s son Fred returned
to Lindsay to live with his Grandfather Andrew, until he finished school in
1926. He took training as a telegraph operator in Lindsay at what is now the
Academy Theatre and started work for the Canadian National Railway. During the
depression of 1929 he was laid off and went north to settle in the Larder
Lake area. He worked as a Forest
Ranger in the Porcupine District and later in the separating mill at the Omega
Gold Mine. On May 9, 1936
Fred married an English girl, Edith Beatrice Lambert (who was living and
working in Port Perry) at Kirkland Lake, Ontario.
Edith had emigrated from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire
where her family were of French Huguenot extraction, being of the merchant
class chased out of Normandy in
the Uprisings. On May 14, 1937
Frederick Lambert was born. Fred Sr. continued to work at the mines until 1940
when the family returned to Port Perry. Fred got called back to the Railway and
served as a Station Agent, Telegrapher and Dispatcher all through Ontario
and East to New Brunswick. On July 26, 1943 James William Leslie
was born in Port Hope and on October
25, 1947 John Allan was born at Stouffvile
while the family lived in Goodwood. The family tried
their collective hands at farming on a 10 acre plot north of Goodwood for a few years while Fred was stationed there.
Fred’s last station was Markham
(where they had been for 12 years) and from where he retired in June 1969. He
and son Fred had purchased a 10 acre plot from Willy M.Thurston
(who was a brother to Fred Sr.’s mother) on Sturgeon
Lake near Dunsford
and each had built cottages. Fred and Edith enjoyed cottage life from 1969 to
1972 at which time they sold up and joined Fred Jr. on the 12 th Concession of Manvers Township where Fred Jr. had purchased 100 acres and
started to build a farm. This land was the East half of lot 13
, just East of the James Marshall Homestead on Lot
8.
Willbert
Frederick William passed away in Frost Manor on March 16th 1995 in his 86th year and was buried at St.
Mary’s Cemetery, Lifford. Edith, continued to
live on the farm till moving to Lindsay in 1994 and then to Frost Manor in the
early winter of 1997. Edith Beatrice passed away on Dec.1, 1997 and was buried
beside Fred in St. Mary’s Cemetery,Lifford.
Frederick Lambert married Marilyn
Anne Whalen (nee Joyce) of Omemee on August 3, 1984 and adopted her two
sons John Robert Thomas and Jason Emerson Peter. They continue to live on the
farm. John Robert Thomas was born August
15 , 1974 in Toronto East General and
Jason Emerson Peter was born Oct 25, 1976in Grace Hospital Winnipeg, Manitoba..
Fred started work at the Canadian Pacific Railway in Toronto
in July 1954, moved to Canadian Johns Mannville in
February 1964 and to Union Carbide of Lindsay in April 1973. He was downsized
in Sept. 1991 and joined Laidlaw Transit (a School
Bus operator).
John R.T. was treated for
Leukemia at 12 years of age and was given bone marrow by his brother Jason in a
sucessful transplant operation. John is living in
Lindsay and is working for Manpower Temporary Services.
Jason E.P. trained at Radio
College of Canada and is working at Lindsay Specialties in Lindsay as a
Technician.
Both are unmarried at this
writing.
James William Leslie attended Radio
College Canada
in Toronto and worked on the Dew Line in the North West
Territories for 3 years, then to Vietnam
for International Telephone and Telegraph (I.T.T.) for 3 years where he met and
married Lang. They returned to Canada
joined Bell Canada
and Northern Telecom. Bill and Lang adopted two children Thomas and Kimberley.
Thomas works in the computer industry, lives in Oshawa and is unmarried. Kimberly
married Larry Peirera ( May 18 1997)
who works in Nortel in Dallas Texas.
Kim is taking Early Education training in Texas
and has found employment as a teacher in a private school there. They have no
family at this writing.
John Allan trained at Radio
College Canada
and tried a tour on the Dew Line. He joined the CBC
where he worked for 27 years as a Technician on the television in Toronto
untill he was down sized in
1997. He continues to work at CBC as a contractor and lives in Toronto.
John is unmarried at this writing.
2. James was born
in 1853 and died on July 15 1868.
He drowned in Janetville millpond at the age of 14
years 6 months. He was buried in Janetville Cemetry and shares a stone with his father James and mother
Margaret (Little)
3. Mary-Anne was born in 1854. She married Ben Parker
from Downeyville and they lived in Aurora.
The raised two children, Lorne and Pearl.
Lorne remained single and died on July
5, 1926. Pearl lived in
Windsor and married Arthur Crandell. They had one son.
4. Elizabeth Mary,
the fourth child was born Nov. 12th. 1857 and died July 18th.1935. She
married William Phelph from Yelverton
and settled in this area. The raised three children, Garnet
who died at the age of six, Ethel and Cecil.
Ethel married
Malcolm Emmerson of Nestleton.
They operated a large farm at North Nestleton.
They raised 7 children, Donald, Ralph, Edgar, Frank, Ellen, Gladys and Irene.
Donald never married.
Ralph was born in 1915. He
married a Markham girl, Eleanor.He joined the R.C.A.F.
and died over France
in World War Two in December 1944, leaving no children.
Edgar married Anne Griffith of Toronto
and they raised four children, Ian Paul, Christopher James, Gregory David and
Douglas Edgar. Edgar joined the R.C.A.F. and served overseas in World War Two.
Ian Paul was born in 1946. He
married Caroline Reynolds and at this writing they have no children.
Christopher James was born in
1950. He married Maura Boys and they have three children, Brick, Summer and Jordan.
Gregory David was born in 1953.
He married Heather Collins and they have three children, Erika, Geoffrey and
Bradley.
Douglas Edgar was born in 1957.
He married Tracy Sheehy and they have two children,
Kyle Alexander and Alex Douglas.
Frank married Edith from Toronto
and raised three children, Mary Lynn, Paula Frances, and Mark Malcolm.
Mary Lynn was born in 1952. She
married Bob Bark of Peterborough
where they now live. They have two children, Kate and Jenny.
Paula Frances was born in 1955.
She married Rob Armstrong and they have three children, Brock born in 1981,
Kelly born in 1986 and Maryborn in 1989.
Mark Malcolm was born in 1961 and
at this writing is single and living in Vancouver
B.C.
Ellen married Mervin Bird and
lived on many farms. They settled on a large farm West of Columbus near Brooklyn
Ontario. They raised three
children, Nancy Anne Margaret, Neil Mervin and Janice Clara.
Gladys married Donald Stutt from Bowmanville and
settled there. They raised two children Jane Ellen, Michael Emerson.
Irene married Bruce Witherly from Oshawa
where they stil live. The raised
three children, Stephen Bruce, Paul Emerson and David Scot.
Cecil married Mary Sanderson and
had one daughter Laura.
Cecil and wife are deceased.
5. John
, the fifth son was born in 1860 and passed away on October 31, 1935. John went west for
a few years and then returned to Lindsay where he married Mary-Ann Steer
(Minnie) who was born in 1866. She passed away in August 1954. They raised one
child, Gladys born on Nov. 3, 1908.
John was a carpenter and did various contracting jobs in the area. He lived at 44
Colborne Street West all
his married life.
Gladys taught school and always
lived at home. She then looked after her mother and her father’s
interests after his death. She married James Isaac later in life. He farmed
north of Lindsay on Highway #35 and died in a car accident. They had no family.
Gladys married a second time to Adriene Vaillancourt which lasted 4 years, ending in divorce.
Gladys passed away on_____________?
6. Margaret Jane
(Maggie), a sixth child was born in 1863 and died in 1934. She married
Robert Naylor on June 15 , 1888, who farmed in Ops
Township and operated a drug store
in Toronto. He also farmed at Scugog and ran a box factory in Lindsay. They raised two
children, Charles Stanley and Arthur Herbert.
Charles Stanley born on September 2nd, 1889 passed away on May
10th. 1957. He married Florence May Stafford (Flossie) of Belleville
who died in 1964. Stanley was with
the Standard Bank in Lindsay, Brantford
and Belleville. He later managed
branches in Newburg, Camdon East, Belleville,
Sunderland, Uxbridge and Toronto,
where he retired.They raised three children
, Robert William, Mary Louise and Jean Stafford.
Robert William (Bob) married
Olive Hawkshaw and they raised three children,
Barbara, Gordon and Brian.
Mary Louise married Donald L.
Black and they raised three children, Robert Edward, Nancy Jean and David
Ralph.
Jean Stafford M.D. married
William Graham and raised two children, John and Mark
Arthur Herbert M.D. (Herb) was
born on May 4th 1893 and
died in Detroit in 1972. He married
Marie Carlson and they raised three children, Joan, Marie and James Herbert.
Herb started practising as a Medical Doctor in Port
Perry in 1920 and then moved to the U.S.A.
in 1922-3. He retired in Milford, Michigan
where he died in 1972.
7. William (Willy)
a seventh child of James. He married Edith Deyell
from Garden Hill and died at Gormley in 1947. Willy
apprenticed in the milling business owned by Mr. Schmidt and worked in various
mills in the area. He went west to install milling equipment. They had one
child Roxina Mary. Willy bought a farm at Gormley where he farmed for many years till he passed away.
Roxina
Mary (Roxie) married Jack Gamble in 1940 and they continued to farm there. They
raised four children, William, John, Ferne and Kevin.
After selling the farm for gravel they moved to Tottenham
to retire. They have four grandchildren, Kimberly, Michelle, William (Bill) and
Matthew.
8. Simon
born____? developed a wanderlust at a very young age and went west.He was last seen as standing up as Best Man at his
younger sister Sarah's marriage January 30 th. 1889
at their fathers home in Janetville. He trapped and
was active in the fur trade. He married but his resting place is unkown. His wife was buried in Lindsay in 1915.
9. James Isaiah,
(called Jimmy) the ninth child, was born in 1870. He
took over the family farm at Lot 8 Concession 12 in the Township
of Manvers.
He died in July 1949 when he fell from a load of hay and struck his head. He
married Margaret Weatherilt of Lifford
who was born in 1876 and died in 1934. They are resting in Lindsay's Riverside
Cemetery. They raised four
children, Marcy Maida, Noral Wetherilt,
Isabel Ruth and Roy Gerald.
Macy born in 1901 married Austin
McGill of Janetville and lived in Detroit
all their married life. Macy passed away in 1952 and is buried with Austin
in Lindsay Cemetery.
They had one child, Gerald, born in December 1915, who lives in Michigan.
Noral Weatherilt
was born on Sept.8,1908. He continued to work and live
on the James Marshall homestead farm till 1963 when he married Velva Snelgrove and retired to Lindsay. Noral
passed away in Oct. 23, 1991.
Isabel was born in 1919. She kept
house for her father and brother Noral. She met Cecil
Bradburn in the community and waited till Cecil
returned from the war to marry. Cecil Bradburn served
in World War Two in the Air Force. He was captured and spent the duration in a
Prison of War Camp. On his return they married and farmed on the 11th.
Concession of Manvers until Cecil died in a car
accident in April 1972. Isabel sold the farm and moved to Lindsay. Isabel and
Cecil raised two children, Joan and Ralph. Isabel passed away on Feb. 27, 1998 after an operation and
a short stay in Ross Memorial
Hospital, Lindsay. Isabel was
buried on March 2nd 1998 in
riverside Cemetery, Lindsay.
Joan was born on August 18, 1951 and married Timothy
Stephens in 1975. They live in Truro N.S.
and have four children , Rebecca, Josephine,
Evangeline and a son Brett.
Ralph was born in June 1953 and
married Helene Winterbottom in 1977. They have one
daughter Miya, born on October 18, 1978 and a son Mark born in 1988. They are
currently living in Lindsay.
Roy Gerald, the
fourth child of James Issiah was born August 28,1914.He married Ethel Cameron Massey on October 20,1943 while stationed in England
during World War Two. They returned to Canada
where he resumed teaching. He later became a principal. Ethel was born on
Sept.11,1925. They raised six children, Roy Gerald,
Brian Gordon, Patricia Ann, James David, Margaret Ann, and Suzanne Lynn.
Roy Gerald Jr. (Gerald) was born June
29,1944. He married Mary on Sept. 29, 1979 and was later devorced. Gerald currently resides in London,
Ontario.
Brian Gordon was born Sept.11,1945. He married
Sandra Lynne (Lynne) Brouse,(
born April 14,1947) on June 11,1966. They have two
daughters, Lysandra Ruth and Tara Patricia and
currently reside in Toronto.
Lysandra Ruth born Dec. 7,1972, married Glen Gagen and they are currently residing in New
Zealand.
Tara Patricia was born on July 5,
1974.
Patricia Ann was born on March 25,
1947 and passed away April
3, 1952.
James David was born on June 5, 1950
and is unmarried. James resides in Kitchener Ontario.
Margaret Ann was born March 13,
1953 and married John Wierzbicki (born March 23, 1951) on March 3o, 1971 in
Kirkland Lake Ontario. They currently reside in Garson Ontario
(Sudbury). They have two sons John
James and Dereck Kennith.
John James was born Feb 16, 1972
and married Carrie Hinds on Aug 1, 1998.
Dereck Kennith was born June 8, 1975. Dereck
is unmarried and attending University.
Suzanne Lynn was born October 5,
1969 and married Sergio Girolametto (born
Feb. 29, 1956) on Nov. 11, 1978. They have one
daughter Jennifer Lynnand, born October 5, 1981. They currently reside in Sudbury,
Ontario.
10. Emily
(Emma), the tenth child was born in 1870 and died in 1962. She was
buried in Janetville. Emma went to Calgary
to keep house for Albert and Wesley. She married Henry (Harry) Hogue born in
1872, of Uxbridge,Ontario in Winnipeg
Manitoba. He was a teacher of those with
voice inpediments and gave elocution and music
lessons. Emma died in Toronto and
Henry died in a Claremont nursing
home in 1964. Both are buried in Janetville
Cemetery.
11. Sarah
was the eleventh child, born in 1872 and died in 1952. She married Charles Nayloron January 30 th.
1889 and lived in Toronto. He
worked in a packing house and farmed. They raised two children, Mildred and
Elma Margaret.
Mildred married Allan
Lindsay and died around 1944-5 leaving no children.
Elma, married Eugene
Underhill, a Dentist, in 1923 and they lived in Aurora.
He passed away in his early forties. The raised two children, Carol Genella and Charles Eugene Jr. Elma passed away in 1980.
Carol married Jack Davidson M.D.
of Oshawa
in 1951. The have five children, Shelly Louise, John Mark, Sean Paul, Timothy
Ian and Carol Genella.
Shelly married and has one
daughter Sarah.
Eugene Jr. married Jane Ellis and
they live in King City.
He too is a Dentist. They have three children, Kelly Jane, Kathryn and Mark
Glynn.
12. Wesley,
a twelveth child, was born in 1873 and died in 1950.
He was buried in Lindsay. He married Marguerite Herridge
of Peterborough. Wesley taught school in Janetville
and later went west in business. Marguerite was in a nursing home in Brantford
as this infromation was gathered. They had one child,
Adele.
Adele married Vyrtal Sisson of Peterborough
and they live in Brantford. They
raised three children, Ronald, Charles and John.
13. Albert
,
a thirteenth child was born in 1874. He went west to Calgary
in 1902 and operated a clothing store. He married twice and his second wife was
Libby. They are both buried in Calgary.
( On the recordings this was copied from , there
were two children listed as the seventh child ie. William(Willy) and Simon. I have arbitrarily named William
#7 and Simon #8 but would welcome and advice on the proper order.)
This family information was gathered by Wilbert Frederick William Marshall
from conversations with Noral Marshall, Isabel Bradburn, Mary L. Black and various members of the family
during the late 1980's. Thanks also to Elen Bird for
the death notices from the Janetville Watchman and
Margaret Wierzbicki for updating Roy Geralds family. Dates and information on the marriages of
Margaret to Mr. Robart Naylor in 1888 and Sarah to
Robert Naylor in 1889 along with notice of Simon ( Simeon) attending were found
in an old newspaper by Joanne Jacket fromerly of Janetville. The original recordings were retyped in early
1998 by his son Frederick Lambert Marshall. Corrections and additions are being
made constantly.
