I am used to seeing just the 1 ruin in European cities - In Rome you stand and see an entire ancient empire before your eyes.

It was surreal to finally see the sites we have studied for years. For 3 days we walked around exploring as much as possible.

We stayed in a cool hostel called "Blue Hostel" which was actually nicer than your usual hotel room - and the owner met us at the train station and took our bags on his motorbike to our room. He then spent time pointing out all the local wine/cheese bars and places of interest. Much more helpful than hotel receptions.
A view over the Roman Forum
It was over 35 degrees every day which is really nice as long as you keep the water intake up. We didnt really have a plan for the 2 weeks, so we just relaxed and wandered around each place and we ended up seeing everything.
Through the trees we realised we were approaching the coluseum - Its unreal how they constructed it over 2000 years ago and it's still standing.
Vatican city and the Sistine Chapel were haunting but stunning. Lined with gold, riches and amazing art it makes you wonder where the church got all that money from, hmmm....
This is one of the entry halls to the Sistine chapel. I had seen heaps of the paintings on the roof in books before and didnt even realise they weren't on a canvas.

Have a look how long this hall is - Its lined with gold bordered paintings the whole way.
Everything was massive, a person looked like an ant next to this alter thingy.
Not sure if this effect was intentional, but it looked the part. There was so much to look at as there is intense detail on everything.
Burning off all the energy from the cheesius meals
We got out of the main centre to get a feel for the local areas - they spoke less english but everything was cheaper and better quality
We discovered A cocktail in 35 degree heat goes straight to the head
Stroking the Salami
Next we got on the eurostar and headed up to Florence..........
