The "Panties" were formed in 1990 and immediately
soared to the
top of the charts, the 'Sounds Crap Band's
Name Charts'- the
paper subsequently folded. After the
Band's third gig they were
snapped up by Tower Studios in Glasgow, who
released two singles
by the Band. Tower Studios subsequently
folded.
Their first single "Six to Wan (621)" was used
by Radio One as a
theme tune for a series of programmes on Scottish
Rock, and was
distributed by Rough Trade, who quickly went
bust, the next
single "Satellite Baby Space Baby" consolidated
the Band's
reputation, and subsequently the Band split
up. The bass player
and guitarist leaving to allegedly pursue
a "career in music"
leaving Tom, the drummer and Hugh the major
member in the Pants.
They were not too perturbed as Pants do have
to be changed
regularly, a new pair were soon added.
Following local TV appearences the Band were
spotted by Pam Hogg,
the fasion designer, the Band where recomended
to her friend
Deborah Harry -who invited the Band to support
her on 11 dates
throughout Britain in the winter of 1993.
This culminated in
Hugh and Debs doing a live duet of "Waiting
for the Man" which
was captured on video. Deborah also
faxed Lou to tell him about
Hugh.
The "Panties" ars DEFINITELY NOT A COVERS RAND
and have recently
been signed to Edinburgh's 'Eclectic'-a label
which also boasts
artists, such as 'Micheal Marra' atid the
'Cauld Blast
Orchestra'. The debut album "Take a
Walk on the Clydeside" is
now available nationally thru Pinnacle Distribution.
Tracks have
been aired on Radio Scotland as well as John
Peel and Scottish
Television. Estatic reviews have appeared
in VOX, the Sunday
Post and the South Side and Eastwood Extra.
Hugh describes hiimseif as "multi talentless"
and is seen in a
cameo role in the coolest film of the decade
"Trainspotting" -
buying alcoholic drinks for a 14 year old
girl, he loses out to
Renton, the main man, and gets his pint knicked
in the process.
Watch out for the dodgy looking geezer with
sideburns and a
frilly shirt.
The Pants supported Simple Minds at the Royal
Concert Hall in
Glasgow recently. In the past they have supported
The Fall, Billy
Bragg, John Otway, Half Man Half Biscuit,
Charlie Chuck amongst
others. They were also commisioned by
Glasgow Health Board to
release a drugs harm prevention song "Techno
Drugs", which was
ironic considering the anarchical reputation
of the group.
Variously described as "Knickers with Attitude"
and Scotland's
top "Undie Band" they are 'very definitely
worth checking out.
