comics = art, you dig?
Comics is an art form; like cinema, sculpture, literature, painting, radio, et al. It's got its own conventions, asethetics and techniques, and can express an unlimited number of things, not just super heros or cartoons. That doesn't mean that they're all excellent and worth reading, but it does mean that you shouldn't disregard the medium. There are all sorts of comics out there, and a lot of them are excellent; don't brush them off because you're not "a comic book person." It's no different than not listening to music because you're not "a music person."
There are bad comics, there are bad movies. It's the same thing. The difference is that comic books usually are the work of no more than half a dozen people (almost always three or less, and frequently only one person), which means the message isn't distilled by the thousands of people that work on a movie. It's a purer medium.
Maybe that's why you can usually only find comic books in little tiny comic book stores, and not on news stands any more. Most of America isn't interested in comics any more for whatever reason, which means that a lot of what you'll find these days is about super heros -- because they sell. But some of those super hero books are great, and there's a whole lot of other stuff out there, too -- genre defining stuff and genre defying stuff. Really good stuff. It's art and it's literature and it is worth your time.
