Community Emergency Response Team
Island of Hawaii
Supporting Team - Preparedness Training
Since 1983 Lunakanawai Hauanio began his disaster preparedness with Hawaii Red Cross as a Disaster Assessment Team member.  One of  Hawaii's disaster preparedness network with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began in 1986 to help develop a Disaster Management Plan for the Kona coast in partnership with the Hawaii Hotel Association.

However, since 1992 efforts asking our government to up-date our disaster system in Kona has fell on deafed ears.  Following the damage, injuries and lost of life due to natural disasters the South Kona Community Emergency Response Team is discussed and formally created as a non-profit organization.

It wasn't until Larry and Brenda Ford's networking abilities, having participation in the Neighborhood Watch program, and as  Coordinators, they led a hand in the development Hawaii's first CERT on the island of Hawaii.  Demands by our organization was equally met with sever resistance by the 2001 County of Hawaii Administration.  Despite this factor, Luna's past relationship with employees of the various Federal, State, and County government cause our first inter-agency community partnership with the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation, Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighters (ARFF) of the Kona International Airport (KIA).

Membership are open to all Neighborhood Watch Coordinators and those who are just concern about their community during pre- or post-disaster affairs.  We look forward to all participants in our on going training.

Hawaii Rural Search & Rescue (HRSR), a partner with SKCERT, are looking for those in the private sectors, such as the fishery industry, charter boating, eco-tourism, etc., who are interested in cost sharing adaptation of data recovery and monitoring of ocean/shoreline habitat and spiecies recognition, are encouraged to participate.
