Welcome Harrison Junior School and Technology Education!

My name is Mrs. Cathie Carroll. I am a new teacher to the Southwest School District this year, but not new to teaching. Although I have been teaching for ten years, I have taught Productivity and Information Technology for the past seven years at Franklin High School in the Dayton Area. It is a thrill to now be designing and teaching this new computer course at Harrison Junior School.

Technology Education, or what I would like to call, Introduction to Computers, will be a nine week course that briefly touches on the Microsoft Office Suite and Internet. This course was designed to introduce all students to the basic computer skills that they will need to continue on in their high school careers. Specifically, students will be given a foundation on internet security, safety and searching, desktop publishing, as well as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. I have included a calendar of what specific applications will be covered over the next nine weeks. Please refer to it for general information. In addition, included on the calendar are a few assignments as well as due dates.

All students must turn in their network agreement form to Mrs. Carroll by Friday, August 24, 2007 in order to be able to work on the computer. This is a school and district policy. Students and parents need to understand the rules and consequences set forth by Southwest Schools before they will be able to access any computers.

This course will contain little to no homework due to the nature of the class. Please be aware that your child is responsible for getting their work completed and turned in on time. There is an open lab period from 11:00 to 11:30 every day where they can sign up and come in to work on make-up work or projects for other classes. The lab will also be open each morning and afternoon for a brief amount of time.

New to the district this year is Progress Book. Progress book is an electronic grade book that allows for parents / teacher communication due to joint access via the internet to check messages, homework and grades. A username and password should be mailed to your home over the next few months and you will be able to access your child’s grades in January. Please contact the district office if you have any questions concerning Progress Book.
