| Released in Canada on June 28th 2005, Wanderlust is the first release of new band HURST (formerly Early Moses). The seven-song set is far different from what Trevor's previous fans from Econoline Crush may be expecting. The industrialised aspect of the songs are all gone, and with Wanderlust Trevor is able to showcase his vocal abilities far better. Says Trevor of the direction of his new band Vs Econoline Crush: "I wanted to go natural...It's a whole lot less smoke-and-mirrors and a whole lot closer to who I am. It's real." It's hard to put a definitive title of the musical style of Wanderlust...there are many. Tin Cup (co-written with former EC guitarist Mark Petersen) and Clear Blue are probably the two tracks that remind me most of Trevor's heritage with Econoline...a certain controlled aggression exists in both songs, intriguingly so in Clear Blue because it's lyrics are very upbeat. Nonetheless, it's a combination that works extremely well, due in no small part to the skill of Nik Pesut behind the drums. Clear Blue is in fact my favourite track off this release. The current single Not Broken goes for the jugular with blasting guitar work from Ross Childress (who plays both normal and bass guitars on most of this recording...no mean feat!). Wait till you hear the good ol' guitar solo in the hook, pure genius! My only criticism...it should have been longer! In Just No Good and Stumble (co-written by John Wozniak of Marcy Playground), the focus is on the riff-rock. I still have those riffs in my head now...A pair of more subdued, earthy and definitely catchy numbers, where Ross' riffin' and Trevor's vocal range are both put to good use. Going Under is another of my favourites. From the opening bars the intention of this song is clear. Switching from subdued verse to fully rocking chorus, in my opinion these are the most profound lyrics that the combination of Trevor and Ross has come up with to date. They speak to me on a personal level. The song Surrender for some reason reminds me of what the Econoline Crush song Razorblades and Bandaides would have sounded like had Trevor been at the beginning of a relationship when he wrote it. A heart-wrenching ballad of mammoth proportions...I can hear the love dedications from here! "How bout you?" |

| Tin Cup Construction of an alibi Never fully tightened the screws Never thought I could lose The bitch is amused Leave it with the rest of me Poisoned by the weight of the truth Still fighting through At every turn Tell me I am circumstance Tell me I am underhanded Play me like a tin cup drunk I will never get enough Rejection of calamity What does your insanity prove You're itching to move And this is your cue Hey Miss Personality Pick a new addiction to quit Tell yourself this is it And take one more hit Chorus You know that we are cruel The things we say and do I never get enough Chorus Not Broken Try as I might to comprehend Try everthing, I know I just can't get, the hang of it I sometimes need to chase Dragons and super friends I like most anything, anything at all Can't you see I try to be Not broken, not broken Can't you see I try to be Not broken now my friend The lies could be ten feet tall Everyone bought it all You don't remember, anything at all Nothing seems to change Caught up in the middle, caught up in the middle A two horse race, a two horse race Chorus There's a ghost inside this room There's a vicious attitude And I don't think it's going away Chorus Not broken...(x3) |
