Why all the Starfish?
We are sure you have noticed the
on these pages and might have asked yourself the question above.
Parables are an effective way to make a point, so here is one for you.
I walked along a beach one morning. The sun's golden rays danced across the water and began to warm the sand. The remnants of the previous night's storm could be seen everywhere. Driftwood was washed up on the beach like so many pick-up sticks; more than a few dead fish lay on ground; and seaweed was strewn over it all. It was a quiet moment except for an occasional plop. I looked up to see what was making the noise. An old man was throwing something into the ocean. I walked towards him and as I neared saw that he was walking slowly along the beach occasionally bending over to pick up a starfish and throw it into the ocean. I greeted the old man and walked beside him for a time. Finally, I asked, "why are you throwing the starfish into the ocean?"
He looked at me as if I had asked a very obvious question, "because the sun is coming out and they will die if I don't."
The previous night's storm had washed up thousands of starfish onto the beach. I told the old man, "But there are so many starfish on the beach. You can't save them all. It won't make a difference."
He paused, bent over and picked up another. He threw it into the ocean and then looked at me saying, "It made a difference to that one."
Haven's Hope is here to make a difference. We
are trying to save as many
as possible!
