Sheyla

Ethi

Name: Sheyla shena Liha'irden

Age: 18 (Winter)

Position: Mage Trainee - 3rd year

Gifts/Focus: Mage (master potential), Mindspeech (very minor)

Appearance: About 5'3" (but still growing). Blue eyes, golden skin, coarse black hair that would reach a little more than halfway down her back if loose but is usually worn in two to five braids, occasionally even more.

Personality: Extremely outgoing, but only in normal (ie. verbal) ways. Really doesn't like Mindspeech, and similar mindmagics. She loves singing, dancing, horseback riding etc. at least as much as any other Shin'a'in. She's not exactly studious, preferring to be active, but she doesn't avoid studying either.

Short Life Story: Sheyla is the second child of four, and has an older and younger brother and a younger sister. When Sheyla was 6 years old, her mother got an unidentified illness while 8 months pregnant with Sheyla's sister. She died within a week, and the baby barely survived.

One day, when Sheyla was 13 and she was at the horse fairs in Kata'shin'a'in with her clan, she heard a cry for help. It took her some time to recognize that it was a purely mental cry, since she had shown no previous sign of being Gifted in any way. She finally located the man, who was being held captive just outside the city. She told her father, who then notified others. The man was rescued, and thanked Sheyla. She never learned why he was captured or heard from him again, but from that day on she hated and feared her newly opened Gift.

Her other gift opened a month or two later, and for some reason, probably the intervention of time, she didn't fear this one. She began training with the Shaman but it became clear fairly quickly that she didn't really want to be a Shaman. Then, one day, the Shaman asked her if she would be interested in leaving the plains. Sheyla thought he meant the Tayledras, but he suggested that she might also study in Haven. She was surprised, and he pointed out that the current dean was one of the Tayledras. Sheyla was still surprised, not having thought that the Shaman, who was usually very traditional, would suggest she go so far from the plains. She wasn't sure she wanted to go so far herself, but agreed to think about it. Finally, she decided to go and the Shaman sent a letter to Firedancer to tell her she was being sent another student. Sheyla left for Haven a week later with her mare (not a battlesteed) and a small escort. They drilled her in speaking Valdemaran so vigorously
that by the end of the journey she could speak it passably, and felt somewhat comfortable doing so.
Now that she has lived in Haven for two years, she is mostly fluent in the language.
