Short Life Story: Katia was born to poor parents in the slums outside Haven. Her father worked as a handler, and her mother did laundry. She had a fairly happy life until she was two, when there was a fire. Her father was badly burned rescuing the horses, and ended up losing his job. He was never the same. He started drinking, and the more he drank, the more violent he became. Katia's mother started doing more and more laundry to pay for her husband's habits, and Katia herself took refuge in the required schooling all children. When she finished at the age of eleven, however, she found herself at somewhat of a loss. She was now missing her best meal of the day, and was around her abusive father more often. So, she took to begging in the streets and doing odd jobs. At first, she took the little bit of money she earned home. But, after her father found her hiding place and spent it on drink, she decided that was not safe, and now spends what she gets immediately on food and other necessities.

Her family has very little, and they live in a tiny, drafty room on the top floor of a "boarding house." It's cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and there's not enough room for the three of them. Before being Chosen, Katia dressed in clothing that was practically rags, wrapping her feet in rags and scraps of paper in the winter.

One day, however, when she was twelve years old, a beautiful white Companion came up to Katia in the streets and Chose her! The little girl couldn't have been more happy, and she loved (and still loves) her Companion more than anything else.
She has enjoyed her time at the Collegium, and although losing her family--her father was angry about her being Chosen and her mother told her to not come by and visit anymore because she had a better life now--she has gained close friends in Niklos and Aleco as well as a sister--the Shin'a'in Aurora--through She'enedra
