Appearance: Dan is slightly below average in height. He has short, medium-brown hair, and blue eyes. He is a bit skinny, but has more muscle than his sister has.

Personality: Unlike Loni, Dan is very self-confident. Usually he isn't over-confident, but not always. One place where he is never overconfident, but not afraid either, is in dealing with people, especially when things go wrong. He isn't exactly shy, but he is unsure in a position of comforter or protector, though his Herald tendencies will eventually change that, at least a little.

Short Life Story: Dan has a twin sister, Loniet, his best friend, and a sister, Cala, who was about two years younger than the other two. Their father, Steven, had always favored Dan, as the only boy, though he did care for his daughters, just not as much, and he never seemed to be proud of anything they did. Rose, the mother, loved all her children equally but she was never a great mother, though she tried, because she hadn't wanted children and was not entirely sure what to do with them.

When the twins were 6, their father fell off his horse on a journey into Haven. He suffered some minor brain damage, resulting in him being much more prone to anger. He began to suspect, rightly though belatedly, that Cala was the result of an affair, and took his suspicions out on both his daughter and his wife, first through verbal abuse. A few years later, he began to turn to beatings. Dan saw this but, unsure what to do about it, and safe himself, he just felt awkward. He cared, he did not like what was happening, but he didn't do much, nor did he know how.

One day, about a month and a half before Loni and Dan's 13th birthdays, Steven got extremely drunk and angrier than usual. He beat Cala, badly. When he turned to Rose, the woman had decided not to take it, and even succeeded in chasing him out of the house without taking too much damage herself. Cala, however, was in worse shape. Loni had run over to her sister, now unconscious, begging the gods to make her better, keep her from dying. The Healing Gift that Loni didn't even know existed opened up, and she was able to ease her sister's pain to some extent. While she was paying attention to Cala, Dan had run to get the local Healer. Cala died just as he arrived, because Loni's Gift, still untrained, was no match for the internal damage Cala had suffered, but the Healer did recognize what Loni had been trying to do, and told Rose that the girl should be trained as a Healer. Their father came back the day after Loni left, and Rose still was not sure how to get rid of him, though she refused to let him hurt her again. The atmosphere at home was low, awkward, and painful and no one knew what to do. This did not change much when a message came that Steven had to go speak to a healer regularly. At first, Steven got worse, resisting the Healer, but even so, Rose's determination kept him from doing any more damage. Finally, Rose decided to take her son to visit his sister in Haven for Midwinter, leaving Steven at home. That is when Dan was Chosen.

Description: Haward is built for speed more than strength, and can move very quickly when he wants to, without losing his rider.
He is protective enough to make up for Dan's current lack of knowing how to help people--protective of both his Chosen and of anyone he perceives as needing help.
