Havan Group History and Basics

The group was started almost two decades ago by a few Arya Samaj enthusiasts in the area. The main driving force and the inspiration behind the group's continued success is Mrs. Shobha Mehta (lovingly known as Shobhi, Shobha ji, Shobha Didi, or Shobha Auntie). The main purpose of the group was, and continues to be, to encourage the youth in our families to become familiar with our Hindu culture and the Vedic heritage. In the process they also imbibe the values that are inherent in our culture. Most of the children who, over the years, have attended the havans and are now in various phases of their adult life, attribute their success to their participation in the monthly havan.
The group meets on the last Sunday of every month. If the last Sunday happens to be part of a long weekend, then it meets on the previous weekend. The havan starts promptly at 11 AM and everyone is encouraged to arrive a few minutes early. Everyone is welcome to participate in the havan, even if one is not a regular member of the group. At the end of the havan ceremony, the children are encouraged to get up in front of the group and present anything that they might have prepared for the day. At the end, there is time for socialization where the host family offers tea and 'halwa'. Once a year, during one of the summer months (usually May), there is a community lunch (Preeti Bhoj). PIf you would like to join us feel free to contact us at [email protected] and you can visit Havan Schedule to find the host for each month's Havan.
