THE ANNUAL PULI REPORT OF 2000 (by A.R. Haudenschild)
The main goals of 2000 was to help the church
- to use the Puli Earthquake Relief Funds to equip the
church with means to help
- overseeing of reparation at the church building after
the earthquake with funds from SEND
- to introduce a functioning model of a cell group within
the home groups
- to teach and to write down a cell group handbook for
the leaders in Chinese
- to introduce Christian Christmas Music for the evangelistic
Christmas Night program
- to begin with a cell group using Fukien Chinese as
their conversational language.
- to build an evangelistic team
With the exception of the the evangelistic team we have
reached the goals. Lucy and Isidro Co have helped with a visitation
ministry from August to October on several week days. In September the
Grace University students with their evangelistic efforts helped to meet
the need for proclaiming the gospel to the unreached in Puli and
had an impact in changing the direction of the working dynamics in
the Canaan cell group in a very positive way. The Canaan cell group as
a result of the earthquake went through difficult months with a tuff
working schedule for the many teachers in the group. Therefore the
introduction of the "cell group model" only begun as late as
August 2000. Among those who were benefiting from
SENDs Relief Fund entrusted to the church for distribution we had around
35% responding to the gospel positively.
2. Assignment in the Sending Function Committee (Year 2000)
Goals:
- to increase SENDs popularity among churches in Taiwan
(web site, program, meetings)
- to add the numbers of mission friends
- to have a short term trip to Eastern Russia for evangelistic
work among Chinese (Blagovescensk)
- to have a mission prayer meeting established in Taichung
- to find national church leaders willing to help creating
a mission council
(- to fast improve ways of recruiting Chinese for mission
with a personal multilingual web site)
In all of this goals was progress. The popularity of SEND
Taiwan's SFC was increased at the TMF
Conference in July, Taichung, where we had a sending
mission exhibition, at TAICCOM 2000 (29-31 October), a evening about mission
with the church's teens and the beginning of a mission prayer group
in Puli by November 28. In addition I was in charge of editing the text
of SFC's web site in Mandarin as well as in Hakka. There was considerable
progress in both Chinese languages to the point that the Mandarin part
almost was launched by the end of the year 2000. Also I wrote a letter
to the mission department of the Presbyterian Church Taiwan responding
to Pastor Hsueh's offer of cooperation with SEND's SFC in terms of
training and sending of
missionaries to SENDs missions fields. The Year 2000
Movement in an interview with James Shia expressed willingness of cooperation
with SEND Taiwan's SFC especially regarding training, end sending of missionaries.
Finally the Defentang hearing about the planned mission prayer in Taichung
decided to start with a mission
prayer in Puli too. The SFC was invited to help to have
this meeting running.A team needs to be build who continues to keep it
running.
3.TMF Representative in the Year 2000 (special TMF Report follows
later)
Goals:
-To represent SEND's interest within TMF
-To prepare and lead the TMF summer conference well
-To find a suitable successor for TMF chairmanship
-To improve the working structure within the TMF Executive
Committee
-To help TMF to become an associate member of Evangelical
Fellowship of Asia
-To increase awareness for the urgent need of mission
education within the national churches
-To have an agreement with the Chinese Christian Evangelistic
Association for Cooperation
All of this goals were met. The conference closed with
NT$ 47,511.- in the black, compared with the fact, that the budget
was almost double as much as two years ago, this is an astonishing result.
On the first two evenings Chinese nationals were free of charge. At this
evenings translation into Mandarin was provided. The conference committee
prepared a special program for almost 60 teens in conjunction with
Jack Elwoods team. Besides, I wrote a working manual for the conference
preparatory committee for further use. TMF has sent in the application
papers to FE for associate membership and is waiting for their response
soon. According to a personal email of Francis Sunderaraj, the general
secretary of EFA, the acceptance of this request will not be a problem.
All of this encouraging results can not hide the fact, that TMF's place
and philosophy needs to be understood anew in Taiwan's missionary context
from a new generation of missionaries who mostly only have a faint idea
about TMF's history and therefore can not identify themselves with
its vision. Currently I am serving in TMF as SENDs Rep as the TMF-Liason
for Evangelical Fellowship of Asia, EFA and the Chinese Christian
Evangelical Association, CCEA (formerly called "The Year
2000 Movement")
4. Building of Relationships in Community in the Year 2000 (Rita)
Goals:
- To finish the Montessori kid's training education
course (3-6 yr.)
- To have a place for Jonathan to build relationships
with Chinese of his age
- To develop friendships with educators for children
and parents in Puli
- To contribute with Christian values and idea to build
the newly founded Study Tree Kindergarten
- To teach kid's German as a means to help the kindergarten
and to have Jonathan there for free
- To have an ideal environmental setup for Jonathan with
his asthma where he can grow up.
All of these goal could be reached. Particularly the German teaching part was welcomed. The other teachers were encouraged by the superintendent several times to learn from Ritas style of teaching kids German. At the occasion of St. Claus (Dec 6) and Christmas we were welcomed to educate the kindergarten (kids, parents, teachers) about the Christian background of these days. We had a lot of fun with all of them by playing and telling stories of Santa Claus and the Jesus babe.
5.Chairmanship of Language and Orientation Committee
To this area a special report will follow as soon as
needed.
6. Care taking of House on Canaan (belongs to the Ev.Sisterhood
of Mary)
Goals:
- to complete the extensive reparation work at the living
house, garden house, chapel, book office.
- to seek for ways to change the garden into a safer
place (the trees were too high and dangerous)
Both goals were met. At the moment the whole garden is
changed into a beautiful park of recreation.
In order to reach the above mentioned goals a lot ofDIY
working and managing time went into that. That's why it should be noticed.
Finally we are thankful to the LORD for all strength
and enthusiasm he gave us to do the job.
