Sea of Cortez   2006   continued.....        pg. 3
Heading south and eventually home.
First stop on our way back south was Puerto Escondido where we anchored in the large protected bay and were able to jerry-jug fuel and water out to the boat with the dinghy. Later, hiking about a kilometer to the nearest tienda for a few groceries, we found a restaurant and stayed for dinner. It was a nice break from cooking three meals a day on the boat.
Out early the next morning, we continued south, stopping at Bahia Agua Verde for the night, restocked with fresh hand-made tortillas, Yumm !!, and then reached Isla San Francisco late the next afternoon.
On our last stop at the island the winds had prevented us from circumnavigating it by kayak. With the weather now calm and the water crystal clear, we spent the next morning exploring the waters around the island by kayak and collecting agates on one of the beaches.
Kayaking around Isla San Francisco
It was finally time to go, so, under clear skies and light winds, we headed out on the last leg of our trip. Wishing to see the east coasts of Isla Partida and Espiritu Santo, we took the longer route back to La Paz. Hopes for a good sail were dashed as the usual north winds never developed. We were back in La Paz at Marina Palmira by four p.m., feeling a bit lost but also not ready to make the trip back to San Diego up the west coast of Baja. We both needed a break from the boat. Not sure of our plans, we spent the next week getting Zug cleaned up and stripped down to be left in the water for the month or possibly the entire summer.
Home now, and with some time to reflect on our travels and future, we have tentatively decided to leave the boat in La Paz for the summer and return next November. We are currently back doing volunteer work with our friends at the Wildlife Reasearch Institute, banding this seasons Golden Eagle chicks in the back country of San Diego County. Cheri has also returned to her per diem position as an audiologist and I am steadfastly sticking to being "self-unemployed".
