| February 2005 - In the Sea of Cortez | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Leaving Mazatlan,with favorable conditions predicted, we headed across the Sea of Cortez only to be confronted with foul seas and winds. Fifty-six brutal hours later we dropped anchor in Bahia de los Muertos on Baja's east coast for a much need rest. The next day we headed out early to beat the nasty weather that can often build in the Cerralvo Chanel. We must have earned some good karma points on the crossing from Mazatlan for we found ourselves motorsailing north into flat calm seas and light winds while being entertained by Manta Rays leaping from the mirror finished water. Our destination was Bahia Ballena on the west side of Espiritu Santo Island where we ended the day in our own private cove, backed by red cliffs. |

| We have spent a lot of time in the past sea kayaking in the Sea of Cortez and it was great to be back. It is a place that draws you in and requires return. Many sailors that have cruised all of the "exotic" places of the world are pulled back to the "Sea" and agree there is no place on earth like it for austere and pristine beauty. The combination of desert landscape and ragged mountains next to a turquoise sea combine to make the luminous quality of the place mystifying and undefinable. It is an experience that cannot be captured by words, film or paint. It is something that can only be stored in the soul. La Paz is the only city on the Sea and there are only a couple of Marinas in it's entire one thousand mile length. This lack of services and facilities have been it's savior. |

| Our last anchorage of the trip was at Bahia Los Gatos, (The Cats). From there we turned back south to La Paz where Zugunruhe was hauled out and stored "on the hard" until next season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
