| Dr. Brown was getting ready to go home for the evening. His nurse came into the office and said, " There is a woman outside. She wants to see you." "Is she on of my regular patients? asked the doctor. "No," said the nurse. "I have never seen her before. I told her its late, but she would not go away." "All right," said Dr. Brown. "Send her in." An elderly woman entered the office. She looked very thin and pale. "What's the trouble, madam?" asked the doctor. "I'm not the one you have to see," said the woman. "There is a man who lives nearby who needs you now." The doctor sighed. "Can't he come to my office?" "No, You must go to him. Doctor, you must! It's a matter of life and death." The old woman sounded so sure, that the doctor agreed. "Where does the man live?" She gam him the address. It was just a short distance from his office. "Just a mooment," said the doctor, "I need a few things." "Hurry doctor," the woman pleaded. "I'm afraid that you might be to late already." The doctor put a few emergency supplies in his bag, but when he turned bark around, the old woman was gone. How strange! He thought. One minute she was here, says that its a matter of life and death. The next moment shes gone. He went to the address that he was given, and knocked on the door. A young man answered it. "I'm Doctor Brown. I've been sent to see someone in this house who is very sick." "There is no sick person in this house," said the young man. "Are you sure?" "Yes. I live here alone." replied the young man. "I'm very sorry," said the doctor. "An old woman came to my office and said there was a very sick person at this address. It must have been some sort of a joke." The doctor turned to leave. "Wait! That's the woman." The doctor pointed to a painting that was hanging on the wall, above the fireplace. "That's the woman who came to my office, not more then a half hour ago." The young man turned pale. "Are you sure that was the woman?" "Of course I'm sure. I was standing as close to her as I am to you." "The young man was very grim. "That is a painting of my mother. She has been dead for five years not." Within an hour the young man became ill. Doctor Brown had him rushed to the hospital. No one could figure out what was wrong with him. No one could do anything for him either. Before morning he was dead. The old woman had been right. The doctor was already to late. |
