The next few pages are dedicated to all of the great chiefs who have led our people through many years and many hardships. Their wisdom is all we have to teach our little ones, it is wisdom beyond all bounds. Most will not understand it, some may even disagree with it. I, the weaver of these tales speak on behalf of those whose hearts are still pure, whose souls stay with Great Spirit, and whose minds yearn for the knowledge of the old ones.
Cherokee Bill was born Crawford Goldsby. At age 18, he killed his first man, and to avoid arrest, he ran away from home and joined up with the Oklahoma Outlaw group, the "Cook Gang". He killed a posseman in 1894, and from there his pathway was soaked with the blood of his victims. Once captured, Cherokee Bill was tried by Judge Isaac Parker. Parker sentenced Cherokee Bill to be hanged on March 17th-1896 at 20 years old. His mother and over 100 other witnesses stood by and watched.

One of my heroes would have to Black Elk. His narratives bring light to the elements which bond us all together. He had a great vision when he was nine years old, it represented an intense manifestation of experiences only he could see and feel. Black Elk along with two others, Fools Crow and Lame Deer, spoke with animals, even birds and stones from the earth. Black Elk believed that in his vision, he had seen that it was in fact possible to hold the power to speak to animals and see the future. As when he fell ill, and lay in his tipi for twelve days, during that time he described it as being in "a wonderful place". He was greeted by celestial horses of the four directions, and eventually a black stallion sang to him a precious song. Black Elk was a true visionary, and a great man.
