| Alton, Illinois MILTON SCHOOL: The ghost of a little girl named "Mary", who was brutally raped and murdered in the building many year ago, still haunts this former school. She has also been joined by the ghost of the depraved janitor who killed her. Staff members of the company who now own the building have reported sightings of both ghosts; inexplicable sounds; frightening incidents; and much more. This is perhaps one of the spookiest places in the region! Alton, Illinois THE MCPIKE MANSION: Many claim this dilapidated mansion is the most haunted house in Alton. A number of strange sightings have been reported here by trespassers, curiosity-seekers and by the owners of the house itself. They have seen former tenants and staff members of what was once one of the finest homes in the city. Built in 1868 by Henry McPike, a business man and former mayor of Alton, the house endured for many years as a showplace of architectural design. However, time and vandals have not been kind and the house is now in grave danger of being destroyed Equality, Illinois One of my favorite haunted spots in Illinois is a place called Hickory Hill, or THE OLD SLAVE HOUSE, in Southern Illinois. It is locatedi near Equality and Junction, just a few miles away from Harrisburg, Illinois. Although the house closed to the public in 1996, and has been endangered for several years, I recently learned from the owner (May 2000) that the house has been purchased by the state of Illinois. Plans are currently in the works to re-open it as a state historic site. Decatur, Illinois GREENWOOD CEMETERY in the south end of Decatur, is possibly one of the most haunted sites in the Midwest. It was incorporated in 1857, but on one really knows when it was started but burials took place there as far back as the 1820's. After nearly a century, the graveyard was in poor condition. The grounds were overgrown and grave robbery was common. Tales of ghostly apparitions and misty forms have been collected over time, including tales that have endured for decades like the Greenwood Bride and the story of the Barrackman staircase, where the ghost of a weeping young woman has been reported. One of Greenwood's haunted and lost locations is the old mausoleum, which was torn down in 1967. The building had been in terrible condition at the time and rumors circulated of strange screams and lights that could not be explained. The mausoleum was emptied prior to being torn down and unclaimed bodies were placed in a common grave across the road. Recent paranormal investigations have detected strange activity is still emanating from this location.
