| Western Front France September 12 1918 US troops engaged Austrian forces during the St. Mihiel offensive. The Austrians would have been equipped with M95 rifles/carbines, Schwarzlose MG's, captured Lewis MG's and probably Itlalian small arms and artillery.. The "official" 35th ID history states: "The part of the front held by the division was built up after the latest principals of the defense but had allot of older "fortifications", partly ruined, which made the wooded hills into a mace of trenches, barbed wire, pillboxes and dugouts. This fact and the long front (more than 9km, approx. 6 miles) held by the div...made control extremely difficult. The 35th ID had 4 bts. in the first line, 2 more with the artillery, another 6 far back as a reserve of Armeeabteilung C. The northern wing was pushed back, the center hung on. A counterattack was developing when an allied success further north and the beginning retreat in the German 192th ID in the south made things worse. Major-general Funk, who led the division at the time as it's original commander (FML Podhoransky) was on vacation, brought forward his reserves into the second line and took back the front-line units which lost heavily in the process. In the evening the div. was ordered to retreat into the Michelstellung (base of the salient). Losses are given as 99 officers and 3,268 "other" ranks, as well as 79 MG's and 18 artillery poeces."
