| General Major Franz Edler von Steinhart, (GM Steinhart)
designed, help construct, and comanded the Fortress of Trento. Steinhart was an experienced engineer in fortification construction techniques and artillery systems. GM Steinhart was also a brilliant troop commander. He planned some small offensives into Italian positions (just for fun) at the Pustertal area and took the positions without losing a single man. On another occasion he secretly brought artillery high on Mt. Cimone then destroyed Italian artillery positions at Bisti by firing on them from the rear! It caught the Italian troops completely off guard. The following day he brought back the troops and artillery without a single loss. To the Italians he was a devil, but to the troops under his command, he was well loved. He always made sure his troops were well equipped and his attacks were well planned. To the troops, Stienhart was someone they could trust was looking after their best interests. |
