WHAT IS A MINIATURE HORSE
The American Miniature Horse is a unique, scaled-down version of the large size horse and is classified into two divisions--34" and under, or over 34" but not to exceed 38"--when measured at the last hairs of the mane.  They come in many forms, from refined Arabian type, classy Morgan type, working Quarter Horse type, to tiny replicas of the large draft breeds.  Miniature Horses also demonstrate all the color patterns present in large horse breeds. But perhaps the most endearing characteristic of the Miniature Horse is its gentle, loving disposition.  Because of its affectionate nature and small size, a Miniature Horse is an excellent pet for both young and old.  They can be ridden by a very young child and then driven with cart as the child grows older. A Mini can easily pull a cart or small wagon with children and/or adults.  Older people find the Miniature a way to continue to enjoy horses when they no longer feel physically able to handle full-sized horses.  Their small size makes them perfect for visits to nursing homes, schools and pet fairs, where people young and old can enjoy the feel of a horse.  Their much lower feed needs also fit nearly any budget.

HISTORY
Miniature Horses were first brought to this country from Europe for use in our coal mines.  But in the early 1900's the delightful nature of Miniatures inspired horse fanciers to began collecting and selectively breeding them to resemble their favorite breed of full-sized horse.  The charming little horse is now being bred throughout the United States, though stock is still occasionally imported from Europe and Argentina.
EARLY TRAINING IS THE KEY!
At Elk Creek Ranch, Miniature Horses are our top priority.  We are there the instant our foals come into the world, giving them gentle words and caresses of reassurance that people are going to be a wonderful part of their lives.  We begin their training at that moment with positive bonding exercises.  Formal halter training begins at 2 days old when foals are led with their dams from the barn to pastures.  Their feet are handled and coats groomed daily.  The many visitors to our ranch acquaint the new babies with lots of people of all ages.  After weaning, we often take our babies to parades, nursing homes and pet affairs.  All this special care results in well-adjusted young horses that are easy to handle, eager to learn, and love people.  The perfect family horse.
Miniature Horses come in many colors.
Miniature Horses make great parade horses and can easily pull a cart with two passengers.
Pintaloosa, a combination of Pinto and Appaloosa, while undesireable in full size horses, is very much admired in miniatures
