Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata)



Flight season: migratory, has been observed arriving in late May, local tenerals appear in mid-August, flies into early October.

Population: may be common some years, but not seen every year. Usually encountered near marshes and Stoco Lake but sometimes noted foraging high above fields a fair distance from water.

Length: about 50 mm to 55 mm.

Teneral male Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata) – found perching on a flower planter downtown; the dragonfly was moved to the relative safety a garden (August 12, 2010).


East of Tweed, a patch of wildflowers south of Lakeview Lane: clearings in woodland supporting tall grasses, wildflowers, Hawthorn, Tatarian Honeysuckle and Prickly Ash.

East of Tweed, Ontario, near the intersection of Lajoie Rd. and the trans-Canada Trail: a shady wooded area, with clearings both natural and created by the trail supporting grasses and wildflowers, the lagoon lies nearby to the northwest.
