Swamp Spreadwing (Lestes vigilax)



Similar species – Elegant Spreadwing (Lestes inaequalis).


Flight season: late May to late September.

Population: common, but to date this is the sole local habitat where this species has been encountered.

Length: about 50 mm, a gracile damselfly.


Tweed, Ontario, the north shore Stoco Lake, east of the boat pier: marshy shoreline, relatively shallow water with mud bottom supporting sedges and rushes, pondweeds, Fragrant Water Lily, Blue Flag, Sagittaria spp and Pickerelweed.
A male Swamp Spreadwing (Lestes vigilax) and its claspers, the paraprocts are very long and thin (August 06, 2009).

An older female Swamp Spreadwing (Lestes vigilax) consuming a male Eastern Forktail. Female Swamp Spreadwings develop a considerably amount of pruinosity with age (August 19, 2010).
