EPIPHANY AND OCTAVE

Solemnity of the Epiphany

Lauds – Sunday of the 1st Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

1. The magi opened up their treasures and offerred gold, incense and myrrh to the Lord, Alleluia.

2. Bless you the Lord, seas and rivers; springs of water, praise the Lord for ever, Alleluia.

3. Arise to meet your light, Jerusalem! Let the glory of the Lord shine on you! Nations shall yet walk in your light, Alleluia.

Short Lesson

Is 52, 7-10

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of whosoever brings good news, whosoever announces peace; whosever brings news of fortune, whosoever announces salvation; who says to Zion: Your God reigns! Your watchmen shall lift up their voice and with one voice shall they sing, for they shall see with their own eyes when the Lord shall bring again Zion. Break forth into joy, sing together, all you derelict places of Jerusalem, for the Lord has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

Arise, shine; for your your light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.

For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you. And the Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to you: your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall be nursed at your side.

Then you shall see, and flow together, and your heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted to you, the forces of the Gentiles shall come before you. The multitude of camels shall cover you, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the Lord.

All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together before you, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister before you: they shall come up with acceptance on my altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory.

Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows? Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, before the name of the Lord your God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you.

And the sons of strangers shall build up your walls, and their kings shall minister before you: for in my wrath I smote you, but in my favour have I had mercy on you.

Therefore your gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring before you the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. For the nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; indeed, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

The glory of Lebanon shall come before you, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

The sons also of them that afflicted you shall come bending before you; and all they that despised you shall bow themselves down at the soles of your feet; and they shall call you "The City of the Lord", "The Zion of the Holy One of Israel".

Whereas you have been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through you, I will make you an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

You shall also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shall suck the breast of kings: and you shall know that I the Lord am your Saviour and your Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make your officers Peace, and your exactors Righteousness.

Violence shall no more be heard in your land, wasting nor destruction within your borders; but you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise.

The sun shall be no more your light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light before you: but the Lord shall be before you an everlasting light, and your God your glory.

Your sun shall no more go down; neither shall your moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended.

Your people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in its own time.

Monday after the Epiphany

Lauds – Monday of the 2nd Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

Is 9, 5

For a child has been born for us, a son has been given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders, and he is called: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; he has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called "Trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified".

And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. But you shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: you shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall you boast yourselves.

For your shame you shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

For I the Lord love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord has blessed.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

For as the earth brings forth her bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

Tuesday after the Epiphany

Lauds – Tuesday of the 2nd Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

Is 4, 2-3

On that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. Whoever is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, whoever has been recorded in the book of life in Jerusalem.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.

For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted sentinels; all day and all night they shall never be silent. You who remind the Lord, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it renowned throughout the earth. The Lord has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: "I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored; but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the Lord, and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts."

Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up an ensign over the peoples. The Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: "Say to the daughter of Zion: See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. They shall be called, The Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord; and you shall be called, Sought Out and A City Not Forsaken."

Wednesday after the Epiphany

Lauds – Wednesday of the 2nd Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

Is 49, 8-9

I have kept you and given you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages; saying to the prisoners: Come out; to those who are in darkness: Show yourselves.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

I will mention all grace bestowed by the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he has bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his grace. For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he that put his holy Spirit within him? That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble? As a beast goes down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: so did you lead your people, to make yourself a glorious name.

Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of your holiness and of your glory: where is your zeal and your strength, the sounding of your bowels and of your mercies toward me? Are they restrained? Doubtless you are our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: you, oh Lord, are our father, our redeemer; your name is from everlasting.

Oh Lord, why have you made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from your fear? Return for your servants’ sake, the tribes of your inheritance. The people of your holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down your sanctuary. We are yours: you have never bore rule over them; they were not called by your name.

Oh that you would rend the heavens, that you would come down!

Thursday after the Epiphany

Lauds – Thursday of the 2nd Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

Is 62, 11-12

Say to the daughter of Zion: See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. They shall be called: a holy People, the redeemed of the Lord.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

Oh that you would rend the heavens, that you would come down! That the mountains might flow down at your presence, as when the melting fire burns, the fire causes the waters to boil, to make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your presence! When you did terrible things which we looked not for, you came down, the mountains flowed down at your presence.

For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen, oh God, beside you, what he has prepared for whosoever waits for him. You meet him who rejoices and works righteousness, those that remember you in your ways: behold, you show anger at us; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as dirty rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is none that calls upon your name, that stirs up himself to take hold of you: for you have hidden your face from us, and have consumed us, because of our iniquities.

But now, oh Lord, you are our father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and we all are the work of your hand. Let not your anger be very sore, oh Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech you, we are all your people. Your holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised you, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste. Will you refrain yourself for these things, oh Lord? Will you hold your peace, and afflict us very sore?

Friday after the Epiphany

Lauds – Friday of the 2nd Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

Is 45, 22-23

Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is no other! By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth righteousness, and my word shall not return: to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the Lord God:

Behold, my servants shall eat, but you shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but you shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but you shall be ashamed: behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but you shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. And you shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord God shall slay you, and call his servants by another name. That he who blesses himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he who swears in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from my eyes. For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be you glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create.

For, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that has not filled his days: for the child shall die a hundred years old; but the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed. And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them. And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yout speaking, I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, says the Lord.

Saturday after the Epiphany

Lauds – Saturday of the 2nd Week with following antiphons:

Antiphons

Wis 7, 26-27

Wisdom is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of His goodness. Though but one, Wisdom can do all things; and while remaining within itself, can renew all things. In every generation Wisdom passes into holy souls, and makes them friends of God and the prophets.

The Reading is from the Prophet Isaiah

Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all you who love her! Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her! That you may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that you may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

For thus says the Lord:

Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall you suck, you shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees. As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. And when you see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like a plant: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

It shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the Lord out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord. And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says the Lord.
