General. In attending the Eucharist we should not be present thereat with any sense of pride. We should attend with all humility and if we lack it, we should beseech God to grant us same so that we might recognize ourselves as his adoptive sons and daughters, shorn of the worries which material gains and benefits bring along with them. Church is a place for prayer where other worldly thoughts should be left out.

Wisdom. The Easter Vigil service is very reminiscent of the meaning of this reading. The Jews knew that God would come to their salvation and they waited with prayer and hope for the moment when God would intervene. So should we pray fervently God to free us from our persecutors and from our idols which are always surrounding us eager to drag us into their deadly snares. Then we can really sing hymns of praise to the Father for all the spiritual wonders He wrought within us.

Epistle to the Hebrews. The writer of this Epistle brings into context the importance of faith versus religion. While the latter is a collection of rites and cult which may indirectly lead one to cast up his eyes to God, faith is a totally different matter. It means putting one’s trust in God, letting Him work throughout history, both cosmic and personal, ever trustful that all works towards goodness and fulfilment of God’s Will on earth. It is for this reason that for Jews and Christians alike, our belief is a Faith (a matter of trust in the Father) rather than a religion (a tie-back to olden, primoridal times).

St Luke. Constant vigilance is required of the Christian for he might be called to appear before God for his judgment at any time. This vigilance could be achieved by keeping in mind the presence of God, by prayer, meditation and repentance for one’s sins, knowing that God is so ever merciful with us and will certainly never let us down as those of human stock do. Be prepared, for each day that passes the Lord is even nearer in his coming to us.
