General. There seems to be plenty of disorder around in the world today, humanity having forgotten God’s doings with us and given in to the evil one’s promptings. Today’s Liturgy is a prayer to God to deliver us from the evil we have brought upon ourselves so that together with the Church we might give praise to Him in peace as becoming to both God and humanity which has been formed in His very likeness.

Book of Sirach. Words prove one’s mettle and Sirach’s advice is worth a hundredfold. A person’s preoccupations shows his fears and the amount of trust he puts in God, thus showing his faith. Out of the abundance of one’s heart the mouth speaks, so evaluate well what one says as here lies the secret to knowing a person well.

First Epistle to the Corinthians. St Paul argues that the Old Testament Law, with its various perfunctory details, sustains sin which in itself is death’s sting. The freedom we obtained through Christ’s victory over death gives us the grace to shed the vest of corruption and to put on Christ with whom we have become one through our Baptism. This will give us full courage to labour in God’s vineyard which certainly is not futile although its full meaning may not be apparent in this world.

St Luke. Jesus teaches us not to be judgmental. Better know yourself first before aiming to ‘help’ those around you, or rather show how good you are. Unless one has received the Light (recall the significance of the Paschal Candle in the Easter Vigil) which is Christ himself, one cannot lead the other in blindness. Whatever has a good nature renders a wholesome product, and vice-versa. Words and actions show a person’s real worth.
