Homily Points

34th Sunday B

General. The power and the glory are due to the Lord who at this time of the year manifests himself as the Pantokrator, the Ruler Of All and Above All. He comes in judgment during the last Ordinary Sundays of the year and we shall soon receive an invitation to repent and put our ways straight during the first two Sundays of Advent. In between, we see the Lord in all his glory, ruling the world whose history is in his hands. In this Eucharist we can give praise to God’s Only Begotten Son, who has helped us come out of the slavery of sin, and made us adoptive sons of the Father, anointed Priests, Prophets and Princes like himself.

Daniel. The Son has earned his eternal power and glory through his submissiveness and obedience to the Father. His Passion and Death on the Cross were too much for him to bear as a human person, but not when as Son he was obedient to the Father and accomplished His Divine Will. He was then given all power and glory over the whole universe and he continually intercedes on the right hand of the Father for all humanity that it might be obedient towards the Father and keep away from sin.

Revelations. St John expounds very clearly the significance of Christ’s glory and how he obtained it by shedding his blood for us to redeem us of our sins. In today’s overall theme, glory and sin are intermingled in that glory can be achieved in defeating sin and the devil or those who do not recognize Christ’s redemptive powers. There will be a time when we shall see Christ returning to earth, to do justice this time and to show his glory above all.

St John. Pilate conducted a dialogue with Jesus to ascertain what the Jews’ claim to Jesus’ kingship meant. Yet here we see it is the accused, Jesus, who is leading the dialogue. Jesus knew that many opinions are formed out of tales spread by malicious gossips, like Jews pitting him against Caesar in kingship to secure his condemnation. Jesus describes his mission on earth as one whereby he was to bring Truth to the world. God and Truth go hand in hand, and whoever listens to the Truth belongs to God’s Kingdom and in testimony listens to Christ’s teaching and abides by it.
