Homily Points

24rd Sunday B

General. This Sunday we are gathering in this Community of Saints to praise and adore God, to thank Him for having given us the grace of responding to Him as Christians and for having accepted us within His Church. He has also entitled us to walk in Christ’s footsteps so that we may really serve him heartfully and experience God’s mercy for us.

Isaiah. In three Songs which he has written, Isaiah has prefigured how the Servant of the Lord, Jesus Christ, would look and act like. In his passion and death, Jesus passed through all that which had been foretold. Yet any Christian can be the Servant of the Lord in his lifetime if he follows the call of his baptism to be another Christ.

St James. The faith given to us by the Church in Baptism leads us to life everlasting. It is the same Baptism which strengthens us to do the works of eternal life. These can be accomplished in our everyday activities which give evidence of God’s love towards man on earth.

St Mark. In recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, the answer Peter receives from Jesus is that the Son of Man had to pass through much suffering, denial and eventual death on the Cross. Peter could not bear these words as his thoughts were still those of a man of the world and did not understand God’s reasoning. Many a time, so do we, though baptized, still reason out matters in terms of the mentality of the world and fail giving up our lives for God’s love and the spreading of the Good News. Let us indeed thank God for the Cross He always provides in our lives as it is only under its burden that we can follow Him.
