Homily Points

23rd Sunday B

General. The name of Jesus means "he who saves, he who heals". Jesus walks through the pathways of Galilee and he there performs wonders, spiritual and physical. He saves sinners by His Word, and heals the sick by showing them mercy. We should indeed be thankful to God for having given us His Son so that we might be truly free and through him acquire an everlasting inheritance.

Isaiah. The Word of God truly works wonders in having the ability to change one and all from one extreme to the other, in a very strong and most effective manner. In order to achieve such change – read conversion – we have only to believe and have faith that God is coming to save us.

St James. In his epistle St James puts into effect all that which the first Christians used to preach. His choice is God’s choice, an option for the poor who are destined to become rich in faith and inheritors of everlasting life.

St Mark. The deaf-mute person of today’s Gospel reading can indeed be one of us who does not put into effect the grace which he has received through the sacrament of Baptism. Yet Jesus goes on healing, opening the disciple’s ears so that he might hear again and listen to God’s Word and loosening the ligaments of his tongue so that he might adore and give praise to the Father.
